Ikea Jurong, Ikea’s third store in Singapore, officially opens its door to the public on Thursday, 29 April 2021, from 10am to 10pm. Occupying a total retail area of 6,500 sq ft split into three levels at Jem Shopping Centre, Ikea Jurong is South-east Asia’s first Ikea ‘small store concept’.

“We say ‘small’ relative to Ikea’s usual standalone store, of course,” said Jaap Doornbos, retail director at Ikea South-east Asia, at the media preview on Tuesday. “Ikea Jurong is still the third largest home furniture store in Singapore, after Ikea Tampines and Ikea Alexandra.”

Jaap revealed that there were three reasons why Ikea chose Jem as the location for its third store. Firstly, most homes that used Ikea products are located in the Central and Eastern part of Singapore where the two standalone stores are located, while the West is underrepresented.

The second is the location, the plan to open a third store in the area had been around since 2015, but five years after, Ikea still had not found a suitable location for a stand-alone, blue box store. “So we thought, why don’t we find a location in an existing destination?” shared Jaap. With 36 million visitors annually, Jem is the obvious choice.

The third reason was: to shake things up. Ikea is used to big, mono-store operation. “It’s good to have a different concept from time to time and see how the consumers will react. It is a small store with a big ambition,” said Jaap. So what’s new and different at Ikea Jurong?

No Warehouse

Split over three levels, Ikea Jurong is laid out more like department store, with stocks arranged on the floor around  12 room settings, 16 vignettes and two sets depicting life at home living situations in Singapore. Amazingly, Ikea Jurong offers the same range as its two stand-alone stores.

Cash(less) and Carry Only

Customers can enter and exit Ikea Jurong from any floors. Payment terms is cashless only.  Over 2,500 home furnishing products are available for the cash(less) and carry, while the larger home furnishing items are available for home delivery.

Each floor has its own separate checkout area, each with a screen that shows the number of people in the queue at every level’s check-out to avoid bottlenecks.

No Playground

There is no playground area in Ikea Jurong. There is, however, a digital interactive wall at its restaurant that will keep little ones entertained. This wall allows customers to colour pictures by waving their hands and legs.

Click & Collect Your Food

The Click & Collect ordering service is available for selected food items at the restaurant. Customers can order food before arriving at the restaurant or for takeaways via a QR code that will direct them to an online menu.

Once the order is ready, the customer will be alerted to pick up their food at its designated counter. This service will soft-launch when the store opens on 29 April with plans to expand it to an app in the future.

Expanded Planning Tools

Ikea Jurong has one planning station at each level and six workers with a mobile system on hand tasked to assist customers across all their needs and in all home furnishing units.

There are also 19 other digital stands that house a tablet that showcases the width and depth of our range as well as a planning tool to allow customers to envision the various configurations of their furniture choice.

One of the complaints often heard in an Ikea store is the wayfinding. Ikea Jurong features an all new digital wayfinding with improved navigation, plus ten beam projections projected directly into the furniture with instruction to help customer discover their full features.
