Efforts have ramped up recently regarding care for domesticated animals, with the change of certain government legislations, which pet owners need to know about.
• Larger dog breeds in HDB homes
Previously, it was against the law for HDB dwellers to rear dogs of a large breed, but the regulations were changed recently. Since June this year, dog handlers from the Home Team and military institutes are allowed to adopt retired service dogs, regardless of the apartment type they live in. These efforts have helped to rehome many of these well-behaved dogs, including labradors, cocker spaniels, English springers and pointers.
• Code of animal welfare
The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) launched The Code of Animal Welfare (for Pet Owners) in June.
A first-of-its-kind in Singapore, it sets the minimum standards for pet care, including aspects such as housing and environment, which pet owners are expected to comply with. The complete guide is available at www.ava.gov.sg.
