10 things to see at SGF Horticulture Show at Jurong Lake Gardens
Have you heard about the Singapore Garden Festival (SGF) Horticulture Show that's been happening at Jurong Lake Garden since last Saturday (27 Apr)?
We went to check it out today so you'll know what to look out during your visit — it's happening till 5 May!
1) Vertical Greenery Competition
You won't miss this if you enter the garden from the carpark area.
Titled 'Rings of Life', this installation is one of six finalists up on display.
The different rings feature various types of plants and their water needs:
Flower Ring: Vibrant and colourful
Edible Ring: Herbs and spices
Arid Ring: Hardy plants
Desert Ring: Colourful and fleshy foliage
Another showcase in the Vertical Greenery Competition is the 'Flora Tapestry', where there's a spiral of flower towers that rise above still waters to create a unique visual form of vertical greening.
2) Beautiful Bonsai!
As its name suggests, this section of the garden is an exhibition of 46 beautiful bonsais in Singapore, from Jurong Lake Gardens, local bonsai collectors and nurseries.
There's even one which has its roots honed to look like the auspicious Chinese character 福.
And bonsais that are 50 years old!
There are over 30 stalls where you can get your plant shopping fix and other related products!
So many unique and colourful succulents to choose from.
4) Orchid Valley
Look out for non-competitive displays too (there are 9 of them in total), which include Orchid Valley (pictured) and Edible Garden (next slide).
At Orchid Valley, there are plants from the Vanda species including Papilionanthes and antelope Dendrobiums.
5) Edible Garden
Spot edible plants like chillies, limes and a variety of herbs and spices here.
Look at those juicy lemons hanging from the trellis.
6) My Mini Eden
There's also a collection of 52 creative terrariums created by students from various schools and community, in this display put together by NParks in collaboration with Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Lots of interesting ideas and designs to see.
The winning terrarium design is one which is housed within a upcycled vintage television. Super cool!
7) Nano Tank Aquascaping competition
This competition makes its debut at the SGF Horticulture Show this year. Be mesmerised by 20 underwater gardens where aquatic plants, rocks and sand are pieced together to create a submerged landscape.
8) Magical World of Miniature Settings
Into the fantasy, magical world of fairy tales we go! Six plant showcases are created to depict scenes from classic fairy tales including Hansel and Gretal, and Beauty and the Beast.
9) SGF Horticultural competition
One of the highlights of this year's SGF Horticulture show is this competition where professionals and amateurs have submitted their entries to compete in nine categories — aroids, begonia, bromeliads, carnivorous plants, edible plants, ferns, flowering plants, gesneriads, and succulents.
Over 450 plants were submitted, and winning plants are on display till 1 May, so hurry down to have a look!
Some of the best Indian Borage plants submitted this year, under the edible plants category.
Aren't these Desert Rose plants just gorgeous?
Take a stroll around Jurong Lake Gardens and you'll also find very Instagram-worthy spots, like the Grasslands. Enjoy a walk through the lalang field — it's also a perfect area for birdwatching.
SGF Horticulture Show is located at Jurong Lake Gardens, 27 April to 5 May 2019.
