Leading boutique lighting company Sol Luminaire celebrated its fifth anniversary this year by opening Galerie 5 in April.
Occupying a three-storey shophouse on Craig Road, Galerie 5 is a multisensory showroom-cum-art gallery dedicated to the art of capturing light through artisanal products sourced from around the world.
As its name suggests, the gallery debuted with five new artisanal brands, each producing small-batch handmade objects, making them unique.
Like in an art gallery, once a displayed item from the artisanal brands at Galerie 5 is sold, it will not be restocked. Even the same model would not be 100 per cent identical because of the handmade process.
The five new brands are lighting brands llll (pronounced “four L”) and Makhno Studio, furniture label Frederic Saulou, and accessories and collectible brands The Soucy Soup and Sticky Glass.
The gallery’s first floor features Makhno Studio’s sculptural pendant lights and collectible souvenirs inspired by studio founder Sergey Makhno’s Ukrainian culture.
Displayed alongside these are coiling vessels by Pittsburgh-based artist Philip M Soucy of the Soucy Shop.
As well as colourful glassware by New York-based artist Grace Whiteside of Sticky Glass.
One-of-a-kind furniture pieces made from slate and limestone by French designer Frederic Saulou and floral scape by This Humid House complete the ensemble.
This Humid House also designed the cacti garden on the second floor.
This garden serves as the foreground to Sol Luminaire’s in-house architectural lighting label AEON’s latest products.
A corridor installed with lighting sculpture by llll’s founder, Belgian lighting designer Sarah Dehandschutter takes one on a breathtaking journey.
Made with polyester tricot wrapped on brass frames, llll’s products are part artwork and part functional lighting.
Our favourite is the petal-like mobile lighting sculpture llll.02.6.
A few of those were installed low in the ceiling so visitors can interact with them in the sitting room facing the street on the second floor.
The space could be a popular photo spot soon with such an eye-catching set-up.
At the time of the opening, the third floor features more of AEON’s collection, but it is reserved for future brands.
In fact, the displays on all three floors are poised to change at any given moment to replenish their offerings.
Next in line will be sculptural furniture by designer-artist Isac Elam Kaid. We can’t wait to see more!
