Okay, don’t even think about doing this in Singapore unless you want to be Stomped, but it’s certainly an interesting design project! Spanish designer Fernando Abellanas wanted to show the world what it’s like when you attempt things out of the ordinary, so instead of a proper home dwelling, he decided to build a secret space for himself under a bridge in Valencia, Spain.
The space is just big enough for a table, chair and a small area for lounging. Fernando was inspired by the kind of hideaways children build, and sought to recreate the kind of excitement for adults.
The secret study is supported by beams that are connected to a crank, which can move the entire platform to the middle underneath the highway and away from trespassers.
Come night time, the small ‘room’ becomes a cosy den.
Even though the study is not situated above a road, there is still quite a distance if you were to fall from the edge.
This sort of dwelling is recognised as a form of parasitic dwelling, which utilises existing structures to create a new living space.
“My work as a designer consists of trying to implement the concerns relating to design, handicrafts and architecture which I come across on a daily basis, I observe, research and develop projects, in a self-taught way, with the only purpose of satisfying my own personal motivation,” Fernando explains.
