This bachelorette pad is inspired by the homeowner’s collection of furniture and art-deco from her previous abode. Wanting her house to embody a feeling of nostalgia yet still giving her old furniture a new lease of life, the educator gave this brief to Ean from Happe Design Atelier Studio.
The result is an eclectic home with a harmonious blend of contemporary Nordic design and pop accents. With reupholstered furniture and the different colours, textures, and materials used, the new home brings together the homeowner’s past collection of old furnishings and fresh trinkets.
AT A GLANCE
Who lives here: Quek Hui Hui, an educator
Home: A three-room HDB at Dawson Road
Size: 710 sq ft
Interior Designer: Happe Design Atelier
A Memories Feature Wall
Upon entering, guests are greeted with this feature wall that acts as the backdrop to the dining space. Coining it her “memories wall”, the homeowner decorated this space with art pieces, puzzles and even the unit number plate from her previous residence.
A built-in light wood settee, with storage space, and pop colour cushions were added to this space, creating a contrast with the feature wall.
Centrepiece Rattan Sofa
The centrepiece of the living room is the homeowner’s favourite rattan sofa. The sofa has seen her through times spent with her family and holds a special place in her heart.
The living room does not have any built-in carpentry or TV console, to suit the needs of the homeowner. Instead, rounded, fluted openings were introduced to the walls and doors to open up the small living space, and to allow natural light into the other rooms.
Pops of colour and more round-edge furnishings were added as accents.
Reupholstered Furniture
The reupholstered basketball lounge chair finds its space in the reading nook. Styled with a new console table to hold the homeowner’s vinyl player, this space gives a retro, cosy vibe.
Completing the look is a decorative reading lamp by Louis Poulsen.
Concrete Kitchen Countertop
Over in the kitchen, the countertop is made of concrete, finished with white square ceramic tiles. The homeowner requested this finish as she wanted a similar look to her previous home.
To complement this design, a light-coloured wood material was used for the cabinets.
Wooden Vanity Counter
Similarly, the vanity area in the bedroom features a light, wooden counter to tie the house together. The pop colour accent of the vanity mirror matches the red doors of the rooms. A low hanging light brightens up this space.
Small, Cosy Bedroom
The bedroom is small but cosy. An art piece and a rounded table lamp act as accents.
Despite the array of furniture that doesn’t fit into a particular theme, this home is visually harmonious with the interior designer’s meticulous attention to detail.
