How Table Matters grew from a humble brand to a well-known name

General Manager of Table Matters, Demi Ye, shares how an appreciation of stylish tableware inspired the homegrown brand’s inception, table-setting tips for homeowners, and how natural materials are the next big thing for homeware and accessories.

by Melody Bay  /   February 8, 2022

Shopping for tableware used to be a fairly cut-and-dried affair – at least for the average homeowner in Singapore – with a limited range available for selection in the usual neutral shades. But all this changed in 2019, when local brand Table Matters began introducing a range of eye-catching dishes and cutlery in statement designs and playful bold hues. A subsidiary brand of HOUZE, which is known for its affordable storage solutions, Table Matters embraced a similar vision of bringing stylish everyday items to homeowners at reasonable prices.

Since then, the brand’s range has grown exponentially, and it offers over eight hundred different styles today. We speak to Demi Ye, the general manager, to discover more.

Table Matters has grown quite a lot since its inception. Can you share more with us about the brand’s journey over the years?

Table Matters started by offering only ten styles – but now it’s grown to a collection with over 800 different styles. We believe that the brand is largely driven by the community’s needs and wants – and that was how it grew in the first place!

Since its introduction as an addition to the main brand HOUZE, Table Matters has been well received. We kept getting requests to bring in a wider range, or requests for particular styles – that was how we expanded and brought in the many designs and types of tableware.

Today, our brand caters not just for home use but for restaurants too – and for all age groups, from Disney-themed products to more classic and timeless pieces.

What inspired you to start Table Matters back then?

As a team, we were inspired by good-looking tableware that can help elevate the entire home experience – whether it’s home-cooking or day-to-day living. Originally, we wanted to create a collection of high-quality and sustainable tableware that has the aesthetic to look good in just about any home. But when we took a step back and analysed the market, we realised that a lot of brands did not provide this sort of quality tableware at affordable prices.

And so, we set a new and more meaningful vision for Table Matters: to make the elevated home experience more accessible to all through affordable, high-quality and well-designed tableware. We encourage our customers to express themselves through their home decor, and channel their creativity through styling their table with our range of uniquely-designed and versatile tableware. It is our hope that the affordability of our products will be an additional incentive to allow our customers to fully realise the vision of their dream home.

Can you tell us more about the new collections?

We wanted to focus on bringing in products that were made of more sustainable and natural materials, such as natural wood. You can see this in the Scandinavian-inspired WOODE and MARBLE ranges.

We absolutely adore these sets as they are made out of genuine wood and marble. These pieces are high in quality, incredibly durable, and pleasing to look at, all while serving its main purpose! The WOODE and MARBLE ranges make statement pieces that can fit in any home. Besides that, more recently we also expanded into glassware and serveware too.

What 2-3 tips do you have for homeowners who want to create a stylish table setting?

The first step is to identify the theme of your home. Are you going for a rustic look? Perhaps something minimalist, or modern? Understanding the overall look of the room helps to determine the style of the table setting you want. Think about which materials will look good together, if the colours should match or contrast with one another, and if there should be a focal point on the table with a statement piece of tableware.

Another tip is to always have two sets of tableware: one for casual dining, another for a more formal setting like a dinner party. When it comes to casual dining, you can afford to be more adventurous with the designs by adding a splash of colour or some eye-catching patterns to make daily dining enjoyable.

For formal dining on the other hand, we recommend keeping it simple and elegant. This doesn’t mean it needs to be plain – subtle design details, like a nice rim, can add personality while ensuring the spotlight is still on the meal and food presentation itself.

What do you foresee as an upcoming trend in homeware and accessories?

Natural textures and materials will be the next big thing for homeware and accessories. We’ve already been experimenting and bringing in these collections, and we’re happy to report that they have been getting great reviews from many!

What advice do you have for those who want to gift tableware sets as a housewarming present?

When it comes to gift-giving, it’s better to get something that’s both versatile in use and stylish in appearance. You also want to make sure it matches the personality of the homeowner and the look of their home.
