Last-minute meal kits from restaurants for Mother’s Day

by Alvin Lim  /   May 8, 2020

Mother’s Day is now only two days away. If you haven’t made plans (or your third souffle has failed to rise), don’t panic. It’s not too late to pivot to something a little more manageable.

With the slew of deliveries and takeaways that restaurants are now providing, some have come up with meal kits that are great for a Mother’s Day feast.

These come as an array of fresh food that would save you from scouring various baking or premium ingredients lists, or a step further with pre-cooked meal kits that only require reheating or some final touches. We’ve labelled them for your convenience below.

At the very least, getting a meal kit or two might make for a fine evening on its own. Else, splurge on one of the more premium meal kits for a quick Mother’s Day fix. Here is our pick of last-minute meal kits for any events you have in mind.

Butcher Boy

Pre-packaged meal kits

Andrew Walsh and Butcher Boy’s head chef Nicole Phillipson, they are now bringing their irreverent baos to your home. With a choice between buttermilk chicken or pork katsu croquettes with accompanying sauces, you simply need to deep-fry the patties and steam the buns before assembling the baos in the comfort of your home. Perfect for a relaxed Mother’s Day soiree with free-flowing vino and plenty of napkins.

Open Farm Community

Fresh ingredients

That is, community supported agriculture. Open Farm Community’s farm-to-table concept has been around for quite a while now – and remains just as relevant during a pandemic. By purchasing 3 kg of local (and ugly) vegetables, you’d be reducing your food-miles while supporting local farms. They’ve taken a big hit as local F&B has seen far reduced demand, so every box counts. Else, an herb box courtesy of Open Farm community’s own edible garden will be a perfect accompaniment to any roast meat or salad meals you have planned for the special day.

Pre-packaged meal kits

Making a good beef Bolognese takes (at least) a couple of hours. First off, you’d want to roll your own pasta – not to mention simmering the sauce. This eliminates all of that fuss – along with providing you with just the right amount of herbs, courtesy of Open Farm Community’s very own edible garden. That way, you won’t have to figure out what to do with half a bag of fresh rosemary.

Preludio

Fresh ingredients

Chef Fernando Arevalo’s cuisine moves along with the times to present a curated box that features some of the best ingredients worldwide. Every item presented isn’t just a great ingredient in its own right: it acts as a showcase of Preludio’s commitment to cuisine that best represents the flow of time. Expect aged comte cheese, slow-roasted Wagyu and 24-hour marinated Iberico pork presa.

The Halia

Pre-packaged meal kits

The Halia in Botanic Gardens is known for its delicious European-Asian meals. They’ve also recognised that even in the best of times, replicating time-honoured dishes like nasi lemak or chili crab can be near impossible for budding home cooks. Thankfully, they are offering up frozen renditions of these dishes that you can heat up yourself in a pinch – especially useful if you’ve happened to burn the roast. You can even show a little extra appreciation with a floral basket, bouquet or vase along with the meal.

Papi’s Tacos

Pre-packaged meal kits

For an authentic Mexican taqueria experience at home this Mother’s Day, Papi’s Tacos are offering a DIY taco kit for groups four and above. Heat up their house-made tortillas before scooping in generous amounts of typical taco fillings like carnitas or chorizo sausage. To complete your convivial fiesta, make sure to get their margarita mix along for the ride. It comes in a variety of exciting flavours like strawberry, spicy mango and classic lime.

Pasta Bar

Fresh ingredients

No prizes for guessing what this restaurant specialises in. They deliver a variety of fresh-made pasta that go well with any homemade sauce you’d desire, saving you the hassle of rolling your own dough. Else, they also offer a self-declared Italian Grocery Box that compiles some classic ingredients any Italian chef wouldn’t be caught dead without. Think EVOO, cannaroli rice (for risottos) and your usual medley of fresh herbs and vegetables that dominate Mediterranean cuisine.

Pre-packaged meal kits

If you’d like to make preparing a Mother’s Day meal a family affair, get their pasta making and meatball kit. Pre-prepared meatball mix, prepped sauce and a lump of pasta dough are ready for your family to shape, pinch and roll into an Italian feast of your own.

Bake at Home with Janice Wong

Fresh ingredients

Remember our article on where to get premium baking supplies? If getting all that equipment and a whole bag of flour or fondant is too much, look to baking doyenne Janice Wong. A master of all things sweet and fluffy, her Mother’s Day Bake at Home hamper comes complete with an assortment of ingredients in exact quantities, a recipe card and even a copy of Perfection in Imperfection. Even if you don’t plan for a last minute baking session before the big day, this might just be a perfect gift to get your mother into baking.
