The Singapore Design Now showcase, a collaboration between the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) and non-profit organisation Asia Society, features the commercial works of seven local designer brands at the Asia Store in New York. While New Yorkers only have until August 5th to purchase the pieces at the showcase, you can snap them up anytime at their outlets here in Singapore or online at Asiastore. Take a look at the fantastic Singaporean creations worth buying.
BINARY STYLE
The brains behind the brand are the bespectacled twin sisters, Santhi and Sari Tunas, both trained architects. Binary Style’s successful Singapore Stories collection is a tribute to Singapore. The Indonesian native, Singapore-based twins have gained intimate knowledge of their current home.
Using scarves as a medium to narrate everything Singaporean from early to recent developments, from multiculturalism to natural diversity, the twins capture the known and the lesser-known stories from various locales.
CARRIE K.
In 2009, Carolyn Kan took a year off the corporate race to travel, and had an epiphany in Florence whilst learning to silversmith. That was the moment Carrie K. Artisan jewelry was born.
Telling stories through playfully provocative artisan-crafted jewelry, Carrie K.’s collections feature designs that challenge traditional notions of what makes something precious and desired, celebrating the beauty of imperfection, and marveling at the mundane in everyday life.
CHOO YILIN
Yilin Choo is an award-winning jewelry designer and storyteller focused on heritage, conservation, and love. “We are storytellers for Southeast Asian heritage and conservation; each Choo Yilin piece is a visual idiom of our personal story and communities,” she says.
A purveyor of modern jade jewelry, Yilin Choo works primarily with handpicked Type A jadeite and vibrant-colored semi-precious gemstones, woven with intricate metalwork detailing, to bring its designs to life.
IN GOOD COMPANY
IN GOOD COMPANY is a label that is characteristically modern and quietly confident. The unique range of accessories carry a graphic, handcrafted aesthetic that has become a signature of IN GOOD COMPANY pieces. “Being based in Singapore and Asia puts us in the center of a varied and dynamic cultural pluralism. We celebrate beauty from the unexpected places and with individuals who have unique signature quirks and uncommon visions of the world we live in.”
Meticulously assembled with mathematical precision and finished by hand, the necklaces are modern, geometric compositions that take a graphic trajectory, interpreted through custom ceramic balls and recycled metal hardware, and strung together by matte satin ribbons, adding an insouciant charm to everyday ensembles.
LING WU x ONLEWO
Singapore designers Ling Ling Goh and Mike Tay collaborated to create Siu Jie, “Miss in Cantonese”, a capsule collection of clutch bags inspired by Singaporean women. Ling Wu was founded on collections made for the modern, independent woman, exuding an inner beauty and strength that is reflected in the materials, construction, and functionality.
Passionate about telling stories of Singapore through unique patterns, Onlewo creates fabrics inspired by Asian roots with a focus on Singapore heritage, culture, and iconic places. For this collaboration, five original Onlewo prints depicting the architecture, culture, people, and flora and fauna of Singapore are used to wrap Ling Wu’s compact clutches.
SUPERMAMA
Designer, educator, and entrepreneur Edwin Low is the creative mind behind Supermama, a gallery based in Singapore. At Supermama, they collect, create, and curate objects, hoping to engage consumers and provide a space that allows everyone to slow down.
Using culture as a context for design, Supermama explores the fine line between cultural artefacts and everyday objects, and the concept of basic luxury – that everyone can own a piece of heritage.
