What began as a hobby seven years ago grew into a full-time career for Malaysian artist Ling Hooi Yin – with a steady following on Instagram (@tinypinc) – who specialises in creating miniature clay figurines. Many of her works are inspired by Malaysian street food, including char kway teow, nasi lemak and ice kacang, and traditional pastries like ondeh ondeh. She adapts these designs into magnets and wearable accessories such as earrings, pendants, bracelets and even cufflinks.
What inspired you to specialise in miniature figurines?
When I started, the craft was rather new in this region and there were not many artists doing this. It was a self-taught hobby, and the first few items I made were croissants and bread. Over time, I wanted to create items that were more relevant to locals. That got me exploring the idea of making iconic food items. The first of such I made was an ang ku kueh.
What has been the most interesting request you’ve received?
I had a customer from Penang who was keen on designing a farewell gift for her boss, who was leaving the country. As his favourite local food was char kway teow, she wanted to replicate that dish for a keepsake, and that led to my first attempt at crafting this food item. It was especially interesting because she had specific order requests, as if she was ordering the dish from a hawker stall!
Are you exploring iconic items from other cultures, too?
Of course. I plan to travel and better understand various cultures, and begin crafting food from different countries, too. I hope I will be able to expand my brand further in Asia, including places like Japan and Taiwan.
As a local crafter, what do you hope to see regarding the growth in the design scene?
Simply buying our products is not the most important thing. It is more crucial to spread the word, be it liking or sharing on social media, or just telling your friends. Unlike larger retailers, artists like me often rely on word of mouth. It’s also extremely rewarding when we see people wear our designs and appreciate the work that goes into making them.
