Ultimate Provence: A stylish boutique hotel and vacation rental in a dreamy Provencal wine estate

Humbert & Poyet gave the accommodation on this wine estate in the south of France a refined urban twist.

by Karine Monie  /   February 16, 2021

Located next to the picturesque village of La Garde-Freinet and 30 minutes from the stylish town of Saint-Tropez on the French Riviera, Ultimate Provence is much more than a 46ha vineyard known for its delicious Cote de Provence rose.

Providing a complete experience, the wine estate also has a 15-room boutique hotel as well as vacation rentals in the form of six guest rooms, six studios and six family-style apartments that have all been designed by Monaco-based interior architecture firm Humbert & Poyet, founded by Paris-born Emil Humbert and Monaco-born Christophe Poyet in 2008.

Tasked with creating a welcoming and refined urban setting far from the traditional style of a wine estate, the duo used their complementary skills to bring to life a timeless property while respecting the soul of the site.

“We constantly communicate throughout a project,” says Christophe. “Our symbiosis is the foundation of our projects and ensures that the spaces we’ve imagined works.”

They also respected the requirements inherent in a working winery while introducing an elegant aesthetic. Some elements, including the concrete floors, metal pendants and bare bulbs, refer to the winery’s industrial character.

Here, they are combined with noble materials such as aged oak, marble, brass and leather. Delicate fabrics, like the Zag chevron and the Maison Pierre Frey Dominica jacquard, were also incorporated

The mix of raw and contemporary details pervades throughout. For example, at the Ultimate Provence hotel entrance, wooden barrels adorn the wall, contrasting with the circular brass lighting in the library. Their circular shapes tie the two together.

In the inviting living areas, the Aegean-blue walls, warm lighting and open perspectives create a unique atmosphere where the sage and sepia tones are reminiscent of the south of France’s colours.

In addition to offering beautiful vineyard views, the large glazed bronze doors both separate and connect the cellars, tasting room and restaurant at Ultimate Provence. Outside, guests can relax by the pool, clad in monolithic black stone, while enjoying the scenery. Conceived for wine and design lovers, this project is an ode to Provence’s landscape and lifestyle.
