Aromatherapy works wonders, but don't wait until you step foot into a spa to benefit from it. Whether you want to create a relaxing ambience or mask unpleasant smells, nothing beats a scented candle. There’s just something about lighting a chic candle that soothes us more than taking a bubble bath. However, if you’re tired of the usual floral or fruity fragrances, then why not check out these unique scented candles.
The Fresh Sake Candle ($90) is inspired by the rich smell of the popular Japanese alcohol and offers an intoxicating blend of peach nectar, mandarin and Chinese osmanthus. Its lush, sensual smell fills even the largest of rooms with its addictive, long-lasting scent. Made with a premium, lead-free wick and a combination of the finest natural oils and waxes, it gives a clean burn and even fragrance dispersal. It’s out go-to candle when we want to chill out and just spend a day in.
Cire Trudon’s Abd El Kader Candle ($150, Escentials) brings to mind the smell of wind from the Mascara coast and the mountains as it picks up on its way the green scents of fresh mint, ginger’s hot and peppered air and the perfume of tea and tobacco from the Ouled Nail tribe. Opening with spearmint, apple, clove, ginger and lemon, before descending into the warmth jasmine and vanilla, this is as interesting as it is exotic.
A makeup brand known for its cool colours and casings wouldn’t be the first one you link to scented candles, but the Nars Candle in Acapulco ($120) is actually one of our all-time favourites. With top note of rich, velvety chocolate, combined with a delicate blend of whipped cream accord and coffee bean for intensity and depth, this smells like a sexy dessert. The dry down also captures the senses with a distinctive base of cocoa powder and creamy vanilla. It’s yummy but surprisingly not overly sweet.
This luxe candle brings to mind an old school English gentlemen’s club filled with rich spice and cognacs. Tom Ford’s Private Blend Home Candle in Tobacco Vanille ($266) has notes of of tobacco leaf, ginger and tonka beans for a scent that will be appealing to both men and women.
If you’re a fan of French confectionaries, you’ll love this candle. The Diptyque La Madeleine Scented Candle ($120, Escentials) is inspired by light, plump, buttery smell of lemon madeleines. Another plus: each candle is housed in a handmade, hand dipped porcelain jar so no two pieces are alike. It’s almost like owning a piece of art, if your art gave off a delicious scent that is.
