When you first think of places to go furniture-hunting, Dempsey Hill might not necessarily come to mind, but the quaint clusters are a treasure trove of vintage and modern furniture and homeware for you to peruse.

Despite the insides of the colonial buildings being individually transformed to fit the stores’ showroom and restaurant themes, the original architecture still remains, giving Dempsey Hill its old-world charm.

8 Dempsey Hill Furniture Stores

Here’s a list of a few must-visit homeware and restaurants in the Dempsey Hill compound:

Marquis Studio & Lifestorey

If they gave awards for the most picturesque furniture showroom in Singapore, the recently opened Marquis Studio and Lifestorey@Dempsey would win them hands down for their lush, botanical feel set against the greenery of Dempsey Hill.

Opened in 2018 and taking up 13,000 sq ft in total, the two brands under Nobel Design Holdings  are housed in former army barracks space, where spa-cafe House was.

Designed by Jean Wee, COO of Nobel Design Holdings, the showroom boasts full length glass windows, while simple white roller blinds keep the sun out when it gets too bright. It feels like you’re shopping in a garden conservatory.

The location is a boon to customers who don’t have to trek out to its main showroom in Tai Seng.

Dempsey Hill Furniture Stores: 7 Furniture shops (and cafes, restaurants)

Marquis features the modern aesthetic of brands such as Galloti&Radice, Prianera, both from Italy and Gealux from the Netherlands.

For more youthful tastes, there is Lifestorey, which retails fun brands such as Kartell, House Doctor, Sits and Bontempi Casa, along with accessories and tableware. It seems the Kartell bosses were so impressed with the new space that they wanted their red and blue wavy mobile screen installation from this year’s Milan furniture fair to be recreated in the Dempsey store.

According to Ms Wee, the Dempsey showroom is popular with the expat community, who enjoy popping in after meals. “The showroom here has become a destination shopping spot,” she says.

Marquis Studio & Lifestorey Dempsey are located at 8D Dempsey Road, Level 2, Singapore 249672. Tel: 6253 3177.

Siri House: Shop, dine and view art at this new lifestyle concept in Dempsey

Siri House

Thailand remains a favourite holiday destination among Singaporeans, thanks to its colourful design and fashion scene, as well as it being a gastronomical paradise. You will find the same cocktail of fun at Siri House, a lifestyle destination by Thai luxury property scene, Sansiri that opened doors in Singapore’s idyllic Dempsey Hill enclave in 2019.

The 3,000 sq ft space showcases the Sansiri persona: to live a Sansiri life is to be fashionable, cultured and in the know.

Siri House: Shop, dine and view art at this new lifestyle concept in Dempsey

Siri House takes the form of separate stunningly designed, yet unpretentious spaces.

Next is The Shop, where you will find – housed in antique cabinets that have been deconstructed and reassembled with modern elements like acrylic panels – a plethora of limited edition souvenirs, accessories and apparel by the future who’s who of Thai design.

For home decor, there’s Sur, which offers off-kilter sculptures; The Archivist, which produces abstract prints; Thingg, the brand behind many of the ceramic wares in The Shop; as well as Siri House Curate, which sells everything from Indian incense sticks to glassware, made by Chiang Mai artisans.

Jam at Siri House is a 48- seat restaurant and bar with an open kitchen

Inspired by Asian cuisine and customs, the menu revolves around sharing plates as well as classic dishes and drinks with a playful twist.

Complementing this is the chinoiserie and Art Deco-esque interiors – De Gournay handprinted wallpaper and Jim Thompson fabric are paired with vintage chandeliers and dark lacquered walls. With a dramatic palette of coral, yellow and blue, Jam at Siri House exudes an electrifying yet nostalgic atmosphere.
