Located opposite the Zen Garden of Citylink Mall, Booktique is a stark contrast to its neighbouring retail shops and food chains. The interiors are simple, featuring wooden crates, concrete floors, bare white walls, and plenty of walking space. Paper, wood, and books – according to founder Anthony Koh Waugh – are inseparable, and his uncluttered store is a space for people to think.

Booktique was founded for the writing community, and it features shelves dedicated to self-published authors, as well as niche titles for the discerning reader. There are only one or two copies available for each title, and a fresh collection is available every week. Here, readers are encouraged to experiment with reading choices.

On his curation, Anthony says: “I read the synopsis and readers’ (not critics’) reviews, and then I pick the most attractive cover. We do judge a book by its cover; without an eye- catching cover, the content has no chance of being exposed.”

What we found: Singapore Siu Dai: The SG Conversation In A Cup by local author Felix Cheong, and The Other Typist by Suzanne Rindell.
