On average, we go to the bathroom six times a day, so it is important to choose the right WC that suits your preferences and requirements. We asked the experts at Econflo Systems, a distributor and retailer of well-known brands of sanitaryware and fittings, a few questions to help you get a better idea of what to look out for when purchasing a WC.
What are the types of WCs available?
There are two main types: pedestal WCs (which are floor-mounted) and wall-hung WCs (which, as the name implies, are attached to the wall). For the latter, the load of the bowl and the user are transferred to a support frame that is concealed behind the wall.
The type of WC you select will be determined by the type of piping system you have.
What type of piping system do I have at home?
Find out the trap distance — the distance from the centre of the discharge outlet on the floor (known as the S-trap) to the finished wall — to determine which models fit the dimensions. For homes with the discharge outlet on the wall — known as the P-trap — you have the option of selecting a wall-hung WC (which can only be used with P-traps).
Wall-hung WCs are gaining popularity as they create an uncluttered look with their less bulky frame, plus they allow the bathroom floor to be cleaned more easily.

What is a concealed cistern?
This is a water tank that is fixed to WCs and concealed in the wall, above the WC support frame.
Some homeowners require models that have concealed cisterns as the trap distance is too far for the WC unit to be directly installed to the wall.

What are the flush systems I can choose from?
WCs go through rigorous flush tests before they can be sold on the market. The volume of water allowed per flush is controlled by the Public Utilities Board under the mandatory Water Efficiency Labelling Scheme, and this ensures that waste is flushed away efficiently with the least amount of water possible.
There are two main systems:
- Wash Down WC – Water gushes from all around the rim of the bowl and cleans the waste out. These models are often tested to use less water, as compared to other systems.
- Siphonic WC – Waste is removed from the bowl by the twirling action of the water, much like a waterspout. The “tornado” effect is said to remove waste more efficiently, but may require more water per flush.
With this knowledge, you’re now better equipped to make your selection.
