Looking forward to Singapore Design Week (SDW)? For those of you who don’t know what SDW is, it’s the annual celebration of design where you’ll get to see amazing art pieces, furniture designs and join plenty of great workshops and trails.
The event lasts 10 March to 22 March and is all over the central parts of town. If you don’t have time to map out your own exhibition trail, just visit these key locations: National Design Centre, 99 Beach Road, Marina Bay Sands and Singapore Expo! But if you do have some time, visit these 12 exhibitions and events: 
1) Maison and Objet 2015

Where: Marina Bay Sands Convention Centre Basement 2
When: 10 – 13 March, 10am to 6pm. Open to the public 13 March 12pm to 6pm.
Price: $35 per ticket for members of the public
Come by Maison and Objet to have a look at some beautiful pieces of furniture, tableware and other furnishing from all over the world. The international trade show is a real eye opener for first timers, plus it gives you a peek at pieces that might come to Singapore!

2) International Furniture Fair Singapore 2015

Where: Singapore Expo
When: 13 – 16 March. Open to the public 16 March 12pm to 5pm.
Price: $20 per ticket for members of the public
Looking for furniture for your home? You’ll want to head to the International Furniture Fair on its very last day as the 487 exhibitors will be selling off their best display pieces at great prices. The massive furniture fair also houses several interesting exhibitions for a fun walkabout!

3) Design Stage 2015
Where: MAD Museum of Art and Design 
When: 3 March – 4 June 11am to 8pm. Free admission
Design Stage is design forum that focuses on Asian designers, so you’ll find all sorts of designers showcasing their works, ranging from architecture, interior to fashion and even jewelry. 

4) Build your own camera

Where: Kapok at National Design Centre
When: 14 March 1pm to 3pm
Workshop is free. Register with Yu Xian at yuxian@ka-pok.com, 6339 7987
This fun workshop walks you through the process of building your own SLR camera using Lomography’s Konstructor Kit ($68). After purchasing the kit and building your camera, the workshop will bring you on a design trail to test out your camera. Submit your best shots from the trail to Kapok, and the photographer with the best shots will receive a special gift from kapok and Lomography! Winning works will also be featured in Lomography’s bi-monthly zine: LO FI. 

5) Night-time art exhibitions and design markets
Where: Gillman Barracks
When: 20 March 7pm to 11pm Admission is free. 
Shuttle services: One way – NDC to Gillman Barracks 7pm. To and fro – HarbourFront MRT Exit D, Queenstown MRT and Block 6 at Gillman Barracks between 7pm to 11pm.
Pop by Gillman Barracks at 7pm to join the late night open house and view exhibitions at 17 galleries. There will also be an outdoor film screening, a pop-up design market with food and drink stands as well.

6) Create your own street furniture
Where: Roof Terrace, National Design Centre
When: 17 March, 7:30pm to 9pm.
Admission is free.
Want to have a hand in building some street furniture? This workshop, conducted by Chemistry is a hands-on session where participants break into groups to brainstorm and create mockups of street furniture together.

7) Free design trails

Where: National Design Centre
When: 21 and 22 March, 11am to 6pm

The free shuttle bus starts at the National Design Centre and brings you to several places to show how design has enable some of Singapore’s oldest businesses to keep up with the challenges of now. You stop by some beautiful buildings such as Lloyd’s Inn, Matter HQ, The Projector cinema and several other places. Take the time to get to know some parts of Singapore you’ve never seen before. Best part of all, it’s free!

8) Learn how a designer bag is made
Where: Kapok, National Design Centre
When: 21 March, 3pm to 6pm.
Admission is free.
Markus and Daniel Freitag will be conducting a workshop on how they create Freitag bags. Workshop partipants stand a chance to have their winning idea for a new bag created on the spot by the designers themselves!

9) Singaplural design installations

Where: 99 Beach Road
When: 10 – 15 March
Admission is free.
Pop by 99 Beach Road to check out some outdoor exhibitions from local designers. These colourful installations are meant to be sat on, explored and admired so don’t be shy and have fun taking pictures and playing on them! See some examples here.
10) Heatherwick studio tour

Admission is free, registration can be made on Eventbrite
Kate Goodwin, the curator of the New British Inventors exhibition will be giving a special tour on all the amazing works from Heatherwick Studio which premieres in Singapore at the National Design Centre. You can just drop by to check out the exhibits!
11) Make your own leather pouch

12) Fifty years of design
Where: National Design Centre, level 2
When: 10 March to 31 December 2017
This permanent exhibition is a showcase of iconic, pivotal and popular designs in Singapore. Visit over the weekend to look at some amazing designs from trailblazers and pioneers of early Singaporean design.
