Trained in industrial design in Melbourne, Julian Koh, creative director of Commune, grew up in the furniture industry. His family founded Koda, an export-only furniture manufacturing company, and so he was able to witnessed how pieces of wood became furniture as a child.

Today, Julian is the Creative Director of contemporary furniture and accessories store, Commune. He heads Commune's design lab, and is responsible for creating the look for Commune franchises as well as scouring the region for home accessories to complement his brand’s furniture. With a concept of which he calls “emotive design”, this inspired him to create a sense of community and community-centred spaces, thus he opened a cafe within the store in 2012.

His design philosphy? “I want people to want to come home more often, and sooner, by creating this holistic environment with the furniture, lighting, fresh flowers and the smell of good coffee," he explains.
