We’re at the Salone del Mobile Milano! Check out our picks from some of the brands and designers we love — Kartell, Tom Dixon, Artek, Vitra, and Gan!

If you’ve never thought of plastic as a luxury material, Kartell will change your mind with their Precious Kartell showcase. Faceted and “carved” surfaces made some objects shine just like crystal.

It’s early days but could gold be a major theme this year? Resplendent in gold too at Tom Dixon are lights such as the Mirror Ball Gold pendant inspired by the space helmet and disco balls, Base light in polished brass and Plane pendant lamps. For furniture, there’s the Mass dining table and console. His Pylon range boasts another precious metallic shine; that of welded copper-plated steel rod bases.

Dutch designer Hella Jongerius’ magic touch with colour was seen both at Vitra and Artek. For Artek, she reintrepreted Alvar Aalto’s armchairs 400 and 401 and stool 60. Variations now include four new wood finishes as well as more tactile fabrics in different colourways.

For Vitra, art director, Hella Jongerius, debuted her East River chair, originally conceived for the United Nation’s North Delegates lounge in New York. The chair uses different materials on different surfaces – leather on the armrests for durability, and a combination of two colours on the seat and backrest.

Vitra also showed off the Planophore room divider cum shelf by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby. This piece featured vertical aluminium panels on each shelf, which can be angled as you desire.

Another versatile design seen is the Bandas Space indoor rugs (below) by the queen of tactile finishes, Patricia Urquiola, for Gan. The long and narrow strips can be mixed and matched for any space, personality and mood.
