Bedroom Theater Ideas: DIY romantic home theater for Valentine's Day
We're serious about Netflix & Chill
By Nikki Andrea Bounaparte -
What's better than curling up after a long day of work to watch a movie at home? At the height of the pandemic, cinemas and other entertainment outlets were closed for months.
Instead, many of us turned to watch movies with our loved ones in the comfort of our own bedroom.
While cinemas are open to the public again, nothing beats the comfort of your favourite snacks, blanket, and choice of throwback movie whilst in your own bed - especially for a stay-home romantic Valentine's Day with your date or spouse. After all, all roads lead to Netflix and Chill.
6 DIY Bedroom Theater Ideas for Valentine's Day
Here are six ways to level up your next Netflix and chill date night in your bedroom:
1. Reduce Ambient Lights
Ambient light is any light from sources outside of your projector or movie player, like light coming from windows, under the door, and artificial light from within the room.
You want to reduce these extra light sources. Excessive lighting will ruin the quality of your image projection.
Dim the lights, invest in some blackout curtains or blinds if you have a large window in the bedroom.
If you do have mood lights or task lights in the room, make sure these lights are placed behind where you'll be seated in your bedroom theatre, so as to maintain the highest possible image quality for that 4K movie experience.
2. No Reflective Objects
In a bedroom theatre, reflective surfaces should be eliminated as much as possible because they can reflect light back and compromise the viewing experience.
This means you'll want to consider the reflective qualities of various elements in your living space, such as shiny doorknobs, light fixtures and even the finish of your paint.
If you have large reflective objects in your bedroom like mirrors, consider draping a cloth over it before hitting play on your next movie.
3. Drop-Down Movie Screen
If you have a video projector, one perk is that you can tuck the drop-down flat screen away when you are finished watching your show.
Flat screen TVs, on the other hand, cannot be hidden away.
Now, if you can exercise your imagination and creativity, you can buy a large white blackout roller blind from Shopee, Lazada, or even IKEA (pictured above). This budget-friendly option should cost you about $30, though you will have to install it yourself.
4. Cushions and Blankets Absorb Sound
Not only is this super comfortable and enjoyable in a way a public cinema will not be, the soft textures of the cushions and blankets in your bedroom will also absorb the excess sound of the film.
This is important for your bedroom theatre experience because the excess sound will bounce off your walls, causing an echo and muffling your favourite character's monologue.
The more pillows you have, the crisper the sound will be.
5. Tray table for snacks
Having some popcorn or nachos is one of the best things about hitting the cinema, aside from the big screen.
Recreate that experience in your own bedroom with your choice of snack. A tray table helps to reduce the chance of stains or spillages while keeping your chosen bites within arm's reach.
6. Supportive pillow for backrest
These uniquely designed pillows are optimised to help you sit upright.
These pillows are best for watching TV and movies in bed, with their comfy foam support for your neck and back. You'll find that you won't have to strain yourself to find the right viewing and cuddling angles.
