Marie Kondo Consultant, Eve Wee-Ang, Spent US$2,250 on Her KonMari Online Course
By Home & Decor Team -
Practically everyone has heard of Marie Kondo since she first took the world by storm several years ago. Her bestselling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, shot to international fame in 2014 and the diminutive organisation guru has gathered a worldwide following of devoted fans since.
The KonMari method of tidying was so popular that it sparked its own legion of certified consultants who help others organise their home.
Certified KonMari Consultant in Singapore, Eve Wee-Ang
Eve Wee-Ang is the first such Singaporean consultant to be certified, and though she currently resides in Shanghai, she helps people from all over the world with virtual consultations.
Eve with Marie Kondo herself
Now, nearly a decade after Marie Kondo’s book came out, we’re living in a vastly different time where our notions of space and boundaries have been challenged.
So here’s the question – is the KonMari method still a thing, ten years later? How do we reconcile that image of a spick-and-span space with the chaos of a home that’s our only place to live and work in during a pandemic?
And now that other design concepts such as maximalism are popular, can we still apply the method? We ask Eve.
Do you think the KonMari method is still applicable in the age of the Covid-19 pandemic?
The KonMari method is actually more relevant than ever before. Our home not only serves as a resting place; now it has to work much harder as our home office and playground. This means we have no choice but to face everything we have brought into our home.
Pre-COVID days, we could simply dump these items somewhere in a cabinet and pray no one opens it. But now, since we have to fully utilise our space, we have to open that cabinet and face all the unused or hoarded items stacked up in there.
So really, the best way to deal with this is to bring everything out into the light, hold each item and ask ourselves: Does this still add value to my life? Does this spark joy? Thank and donate those that no longer serve you.
For the items that stay, give them each a nice home with their family – spare staplers should belong in a stationery drawer, skipping ropes should be stored with other gym equipment.
How can we adapt the KonMari method to hybrid WFH arrangements?
By zoning, or carving out a work space for yourself in one section of your home.
Zoning creates mental and physical boundaries which prepare us to be in our work zone, and when we physically step away from our work zone for a break, it’s easier to relax.
For those with space constraints, demarcate your personal zones with items like potted plants or a small divider.
The most important thing is that every member in the household has their own personal storage space.
When we take ownership of something, we tend to make the extra effort to keep it tidy.
Is Marie Kondo synonymous with minimalist and Zen aesthetics?
I think this comes from the fact that when we remove things that no longer serve, our spaces look like they are drastically pared down to the bare minimum.
We start to notice light shining into places that were once blocked. Our space suddenly appears brighter and fresher.
For some people, this Zen-like minimalist state is what brings them peace and calm. For others like myself, the home can be filled with items that bring joy such as scented candles, fresh flowers and plants.
The essence of the KonMari method is to live your ideal lifestyle by cherishing things that bring you joy – no matter if you are a minimalist or a maximalist.
How can someone get certified as a Marie Kondo consultant?
There are several steps to become a certified KonMari consultant. Apart from reading Marie Kondo’s books, you’ll have to join the virtual consultant certification course, which costs US$2,250.
There will be practice sessions with clients, an exam and interview, and after that you’ll sign the terms and pay an annual licensing fee of US$500 to be listed on the Konmari website.
How are you helping people these days?
I offer both virtual and in-person talks for companies and individuals, guiding them to tidy up on their own using the KonMari method.
The KonMari community is growing. In Singapore, we now have seven certified consultants.
Whether you are looking for virtual help or someone to physically guide you in your own home, there are plenty of options to reset your house. As Marie Kondo famously said: “Life truly begins after you have put your house in order.”
