Swiss furniture company Vitra is currently presenting an exhibition titled ‘Project Vitra – Design, Architecture, Communications (1950-2017)’  at the National Design Centre, and will be on until 13 July 2018.

The exhibition presents an overview of the diverse cultural and commercial activities of the family-owned business, and also its history.

On display are many of the company’s iconic furniture pieces, designed by the likes of renowned designers like Charles and Ray Eames, and contemporaries such as Antonio Citterio and Jasper Morrison.

Eames Elephant (1945)

In the 1940s, famous American design couple Charles and Ray Eames developed a technique for moulding plywood into three-dimensional shapes, creating furniture with sculptural qualities such as the Eames Elephant.

The Eames elephant has also been launched in plastic, making it more suitable for children, who were the original intended users of the decorative figure.

La Chaise (1948)

Also designed by the Eameses, this poetic piece is moulded to adequately support a body in both sitting and reclining positions.

Heart Cone Chair (1958)

Named after its heart-shaped silhouette, this chair by Danish furniture designer Verner Panton is one of the most famous designs in his furniture collection inspired by simple geometric shapes.

Coffee Table (1944)

The heavy plate glass top of the Coffee Table by sculptor and designer Isamu Noguchi rests on two identical wooden elements placed at right angles. The brass Candle Holders on top are designed by Alexander Girard.

Panton Chair (1968)

After many years of prototyping, Verner Panton's idea to create a plastic cantilever chair was finally materialised in 1968, which means the chair celebrates its 50th birthday this year!

Sunflower Clock (1948-1960)

American industrial designer George Nelson designed a series of wall clocks, including the famous Ball Clock, which remain timeless even today.

Tip Ton (2011)

This solid plastic forward-tilting chair is not just fun, but has also been proven to improve circulation as increased muscle activity in the back and abdominal area boosts supply of oxygen to the rest of the body.

Belville Chair (2015)

Named after the Paris neighbourhood in which its designers, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, have their studio, the chair features elements found in classic French bistro furnishings.

Landi Chair (1938) 

Developed by Hans Coray for the 1939 Swiss National Exhibition, this chair has become a classic with its all-aluminium moulded build and 91 punched holes in its seat.
