An explosion of rainbow colours greets visitors to the Indonesian village of Jodipan in Malang, East Java.
The village, known to locals as "Kampung Warna-Warni", is believed to the brainchild of a group of students, who came up with the idea to paint residents' houses in a profusion of colours . "Warna-warni" means multicolour.
Eight communication students from Muhammadiyah University in Malang converted the slummy settlement on the banks of the Brantas River, in Blimbing district, into a tourist attraction, reported the Jakarta Post.
However, the students said attracting tourists was not part of the plan, although the daily stream of visitors has turned out to be a welcome source of revenue, the report said.
The neat homes boast colourful roofs, walls, gates, footpaths and stone steps.
The house-painting project was inspired by a settlement zone in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the report added.
