Established in 1971, the Shangri-La Hotel Singapore is the hotel chain’s first establishment and is famed for setting the grand look of classic elegance, which is now a hallmark of the brand. Yet, over the years, the interiors began to show its age, which explains the eight-month renovation of the opulent Tower Wing. The newly rejuvenated, 503-room
Tower Wing recently opened to popular reception; replacing the warm hues and heavy glass chandeliers is a fresh, almost monochromatic resort-look decked in greenery -- still inviting and stately, but with less cliched opulence.
This look was inspired by the hotel’s namesake, the fictional place between Heaven and Earth mentioned in James Hilton’s novel Lost Horizon. Designer Ryoichi Niwata achieved a zen atmosphere by imbuing five natural elements (stone, wood, trees, water and wind) throughout the Tower Wing – from the tall potted Ficus benjamina trees framing the lobby’s still pond, to the graceful Tree Canopy ceiling art installation by Hirotoshi Sawada.
The Tree Canopy installation, made of thousands of cascading stylised leaves, greets you at the lobby.
The hotel spared no expense in getting renowned artists and designers to install statement-making artwork. Chosen for their genuine appreciation for nature, works like the perspective challenging Children Dabbling In The Water sculptures by artist Yi Hwan Kwon, make a visit to the hotel well worth it.
The Tower Wing also ushers in brand new rooms, whose earthy palette creates a restful oasis. The 409sqf Deluxe Rooms come with floor-to-ceiling windows, glass wardrobes and a choice of city or pool views.
