Rattan is the star of Aesop's stunning Vivocity store

A busy mall like Vivocity may seem like the antithesis to Australian skincare brand Aesop, whose soothing, botanical ingredients inspires calm and harmony in your everyday life, but the location of its sixth Singapore store -- a cosy space in a quiet corner of the mall -- certainly helps in the creation of its understated design.

Aesop opened this store a year ago, but it was only recently that members of the press were able to meet with the architect of the Vivocity outlet. Here, architect Kian Yam from MLKK Studio pays homage to Singapore's rich history of crafts and the everyday domestic life.

Unglazed geometric cement tiles and woven rattan were chosen as the main materials; its accessibility has made these elements a mainstay in domestic households. Kian Yam worked with local brand Chun Mee Lee Rattan Furnishings to produce the furnishings in the store.

The blonde rattan -- which also makes up the large lantern-inspired lamp in the store -- goes well with the weathered bronze and brass sink as well as honeyed tones of the timber countertops. The sink is also where most of the consultations take place; ask the staff about skincare, and they will surely dole out useful tips tailored to your individual needs.
