Tucked away in a quiet residential street, among a row of terrace houses, Retro Colony inhabits a 1,700sqf dwelling – more specifically, the award-winning 'T-House' by local practice Linghao Architects.

There's something compelling about the structure's minimalist aesthetics, and its exposed concrete and brick surfaces make it the perfect backdrop for Retro Colony's offerings. Japanese heritage brand Karimoku's Karimoku60 range, which has an elegant and timeless style, makes up the bulk of the furniture it stocks.

"The furniture is produced according to design specifications that date back to the 1960s, hence the name," explains Roger Quah, the store's co-founder. "Karimoku60 is made for Japanese homes, which are small spaces and very much like our homes in Singapore," he elaborates, on the compact, functional designs.

Attesting to this is the 6m-wide living area of the house, which showcases sofas, sideboards, desks, tables and more, but navigating the narrow space is still easy.

Karimoku is very popular in Japan and South Korea, according to Roger. He and his business partner, both of whom used to work in the advertising industry, were fans of the label for years before deciding to bring the brand in. It is exclusively available in South Asia through Retro Colony, but that's not all you can get here. Also available in a range of finishes is the Butterfly or BKF chair made by Swedish brand Cuero, iconic industrial-style lampes by from French brand Jielde, and Fire King tableware from Japan.
