With architecture by Herzog & de Meuron and interiors by John Pawson, this New York City hotel created by entrepreneur Ian Schrager is an ode to sophisticated minimalism

The Big Apple is home to a huge number of hotels, but this address offers something different. Nestled in a building designed by renowned Swiss studio Herzog & de Meuron, PUBLIC Hotel NYC redefines luxury, focusing on experience rather than price point.

Hotel: Public Hotel, New York City
Rooms: 367 rooms
Address: 215 Chrystie St, New York, NY 10002, United States
Phone: +1 212-735-6000
Price: $420 per night

As a starting point, entrepreneur Ian Schrager — who conceived of the project — was interested in democratising luxury and adapting to new lifestyles. “Times change, people change, culture changes,” he says.

All the dining establishments in the hotel offer a different look.

Interior Design by John Pawson

Not only a place to lay one’s head, PUBLIC Hotel NYC aims to create emotions for discerning and cosmopolitan travelers through its interior design by John Pawson.

Contained within a Donald Judd and Anish Kapoor- inspired enclosure, the iconic entranceway escalator with reflective, custom copper-colored stainless steel creates an infinity lighting effect.

Free, Fast Wi-Fi

Once inside the hotel, the presence of several public areas — with free and fast Wi-Fi — emphasises Ian Schrager’s idea of being inclusive instead of exclusive.

Subdued lighting and elegant touches give this hotel a modern and sleek atmosphere.

Microclub, in Public Hotel NYC

With floor-to-ceiling windows providing panoramic views of the city and immersive art, sound and lighting inspired by James Turrell, Microclub — which opened its doors in December 2022 — has already hosted top DJs, such as Ty Sunderland, Benji B, Honey Dijon, MoodyMann, and BLOND:ISH, among others, in an immersive atmosphere.

Chef Diego Munoz brings the best of Peruvian cuisine — with traditions from Incan, Spanish, Moorish, African, Italian, Chinese and Japanese gastronomy — at restaurant Popular, while the adjacent expansive open-air terrace Bowery Garden evokes the Tuileries Garden in Paris.

Bar Chrystie, Rooftop Terrace Bar

And that’s not all: The sexy and moody Bar Chrystie celebrates the New York City cocktail culture and the spirit of the 1920s and Hollywood’s glamorous Golden Age. To enjoy some of the best views, the roof terrace offers five private igloos — for up to eight people each — with a fire pit and blankets for a cosy feel.

Warm, earthy tones are used for the rooms in the hotel, adding a cosy ambiance to the resting areas.

Personalised service and comfort are also at the heart of PUBLIC Hotel NYC. The pure and timeless design contributes to the relaxing atmosphere, where guests and visitors feel even more comfortable than they do at home.

Harmony and functionality meet in the 367 rooms, which look like cabins in a yacht. The objective consisted in finding the perfect balance between the different elements and eliminating clutter.

According to Ian Schrager, PUBLIC Hotel epitomises “simplicity as the ultimate sophistication.”
