Homeowners and interior designers today are spoilt for choice with the slew of easy-to-use interior design softwares to space plan, design, and embark on a home renovation from scratch. Most of these creation tools come at no cost at all.
Lately, an army of AI-powered interior design tools has entered the room to transform any interior space and reimagine the possibilities through beautiful and realistic image renders.
What is RoomGPT?
If you have been catching up on the latest news, you would have heard about ChatGPT and all of its intelligent content creation capabilities in text formats. Using the same GPT-3 function in ChatGPT, RoomGPT is able to remodel and generate true-to-life image variations of an uploaded photo of your room based on the selected room theme as prompts.
Room GPT is a newly-developed open source AI room generator tool created and published by Hassan El Mghari in March 2023. We reviewed a range of AI interior design tools and listed the advantages and disadvantages of each tool, and RoomGPT emerged as one of the highly-rated tools.
“This is incredible, you don’t need an interior designer anymore” product reviewed by Ade Dada, Startup Founder.
With over 1 million users and its positive user-generated reviews, we want to find out the interior designers’ take on this intuitive AI interior design tool.
Interior designers impressed by RoomGPT
Despite being a newcomer to the professional domain, RoomGPT has now taken a seat with the interior designers locally, where interior designers are admittedly impressed by what this intuitive AI tool can do upon trying it out for themselves. Seeing is believing, the speed of a lifelike artist's impression rendered in a snap of the fingers is reportedly amazing.
Most of the interior designers we spoke to were open to adopting it as part of their future interior design process mainly in the initial proposal stages. RoomGPT is effective for interior designers at visualising mood images in different styles and perspectives quickly, or even for homeowners at constructing a design brief in a fast and efficient manner.

Interior design is more than just pretty pictures
If you have gone through any renovation process, you will know that receiving the visual render of your home is just the start. At the initial interior design process, major components such as detailed technical drawings for carpentry works and the electrical plan for lighting and electrical switches also need to come into play, in order to make progress with actual on-site work.
As mentioned by Ong Choo Yih, a principal designer at HDA Studio, interior design is more than the aesthetic aspect. A professional interior designer will begin by understanding the various lifestyle, habits, and needs of each household member, taking them into careful consideration during space planning. In his latest project, Choo Yih even designated spaces for the homeowner’s pet.

RoomGPT useful for homeowners
It is no surprise that many aspiring homeowners are on Pinterest, Instagram, or even Qanvast to look for interior design inspiration and to also put together a dream home moodboard.
Homeowners without any prior design training could also use a user-friendly tool like RoomGPT as a visual aid to help with expressing the vision they have for their home through the generated images. It will also be beneficial for homeowners in their personal understanding of the different interior design styles.
Interior designers can look forward to more fulfilling consultation sessions with homeowners, as RoomGPT renders supplemented with additional inspiration images by the homeowners would work as a great kick-off tool, as expressed by Alfred Lim, a designer from BuildBuilt.
Disadvantages of RoomGPT
An associate director of Free Space Intent, Leon Luo highlighted the potential pitfall of RoomGPT when it lands into the hands of unscrupulous and phoney individuals claiming to be interior designers, fully depending on such tools to get trusting homeowners to buy into their bogus interior design services.
Additionally, Leon added that RoomGPT may end up causing homeowners to have unrealistic expectations of how a space should look ideally, as they do not know about the practical limitations and difficulties in technicality in reality.
RoomGPT: Room for improvement
The beauty of artificial intelligence is in its machine learning ability, where RoomGPT is able to pick up learnings from previous data inputs and with more data translate to greater accuracy in personalising recommendations.
A new AI tool like RoomGPT has room for advancements and improvements in order to be fully functional for homeowners and interior designers to visualise every detail and to offer greater variations in interior design themes within their dream homes.
