1. Poul Henningsen

Poul Henningsen achieved international icon status with a series of lighting fixtures in the 1920s when the electric light bulb was still considered a new technology.

He is most famous for the PH lamp, The Artichoke Lamp (above), and The Snowball Lamp, which are still manufactured nearly a century after they were initially designed.

The fascinating aspect of his lamp designs, such as the Snowball lamp (above), are the ways he plays with the light being reflected off the panels of the lamp shade.

2. Josef Frank-inspired textiles

Austrian-born architect Josef Frank became a Swedish citizen in the 1930s.

He became renowned for his colourful fabric designs for the Swedish company Svenskt Tenn and his fabrics are still highly sought-after on the design scene today.

3. Arne Jacobsen

Architect Arne Jacobsen was quite possibly one of the most prolific Scandinavian modernist designers of his time.

His bent plywood Ant Chair sold in the millions. He was influenced by Mies Van Der Rohe, Le Corbusier, and Charles and Ray Eames, and many of his chair and lighting designs are still sold today.

4. Greta Grossman

Despite Greta Magnusson Grossman spending the last 50 years of her life in California, she initially established herself as a young designer in Sweden, her home country.

Marrying Scandinavian and Californian modernist aesthetics, she opened her second shop on Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles, selling Swedish designs to notable personalities like Greta Garbo and Frank Sinatra.

5. Finn Juhl

Finn Juhl, a highly influential modernist designer for his time, is credited alongside other well-known designers for introducing Danish design to North America.

He made his American debut at the MoMa in New York in 1951. The iconic sensual shapes of his designs have won him many awards, some of which were awarded postmortem: His Baker Sofa won Best Reissue in the Wallpaper Design Awards in 2010.
