Archifest 2018: 9 things to see and do

The annual architecture festival Archifest is back! Organised by the Singapore Institute of Architects (SIA), this two-week long event will run from this Friday to 10 October 2018. With the theme this year focusing on 'Design for Life', and elaborated in sub-themes: 'Design for People', 'Design for Time' and 'Design for Environment', there's lots of exciting things happening. Here're 10 things you should check out!

1) Archifest Pavilion

Every year, SIA awards a winning design for the Archifest Pavilion. This year, the winner is none other than Kite Studio Architecture with their multi-purpose HDB void deck-inspired design.

The pastel-hued pop up will be located at the Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza. This interactive space also allows visitors to participate in creating a unique look by painting bricks to create a mural of the iconic Rochor Centre.

2) SIA Annual Conference

Learn more about what makes good architecture, and what like-minded individuals in the industry are doing to better the design environment in our region and beyond. At the SIA Annual Conference this year, keynote speaker and renowned international architect Borja Ferrater will share about his thoughtful designs as well as experiences as an educator and academic. He speaks alongside established architects and industry players including Colin Seah of Ministry of Design, and Jeremy Rowe of AkzoNobel.

3) Architours

This sell-out event is something many look forward to year on year! 

Where will the tours bring you this year?

Visit the Stark House by Park+Associates, which is an atypical house with clever architectural design strategies and greenery that fills the home.

4) Archicraft: Your City Sketching Moments

Keen to be part of a sketching workshop? Sign up for this, happening on Saturday 6 Oct from 3 to 6pm at the ArtScience Museum.

Organiser Sutdio will be teaching you how you can use ink and wash to sketch your own perspectives of city scenes.

5) Film screenings

Explore people-centric desig through a filmmaker's lens. Five films will be screened as part of Archifest, including local film 03-Flats, which follows the domestic existence of three single women striving for independence at different stages of their lives amidst the backdrop of HDB living.

6) Parasite Architecture

If the fact that historical, iconic architecture in Singapore are disappearing too quickly. Learn how under-utilised spaces can be given new life and purpose at this exhibition at URA. You'll learn the possibilities of adaptive reuse in the contet of community strengthening.

7) KIDsBuild

Get your kids interested in architecture too! Pop by Millenia Walk Great Hall from Friday (5 Oct) to Sat (6 Oct) to check out KIDsBuild, where participants are given the opportunities to build with varieties of model-making materials.

8) The Singapore Gothic

Take a closer look at signages in the commercial and industrial environments and you will be delighted by their interesting designs and expressions. Learn more at this talk cum interactive exhibit at Library@Orchard on Sun (7 Oct), 3-5pm.

9) Monomer House 1

Can a pre-fabricated design look fabulous? A D Lab proves it with the Monomer House 1 – a pre-fabricated, pre-finished micro house that does not compromise its interior and exterior aesthetics. The house will showcase how faster, easier, smarter and greener forms of construction are changing the design and construction industry.​
