In light of Singapore's 51st birthday, we take a look at 10 brands you probably didn’t know had its roots in Singapore:

1. Pearlie White
Pearlie White is the only Singaporean oral care brand that still manufactures within the country. The company was founded in 1869 by the first dentist in Singapore, Dr. Cheong Chun Tin.

Although its name sounds Japanese, Akira was actually founded in 1996 in Singapore. Today, Akira is still as well-loved and affordable both in Singapore and internationally.

3. Banyan Tree
Banyan Tree Holdings first started out with a nature-centric resort in Phuket with just seven staff memebers. Fast-forward 30 years, Banyan Tree is now a familiar name to luxury travellers with more than 35 hotels and resorts, 70 spas and 80 retail galleries all over the world.

Founded in Singapore by Mr. W.E. Huber in 1962, Boncafe is now widely distributed around the world.

Established in 1947 by Dato Dr. Tan Hian Tsin, the Crocodile brand's first shop was at North Bridge Road — where the Parliament House now stands. The international brand has expanded into manufacturing quality footwear, timepieces, leather goods and travel goods.

Started in 1998 by two ex-Singapore Airlines staff, Fish N Co's first store was in Plaza Singapura. The company has grown exponentially, with restaurants in nine countries, including the UAE, Bangladesh and Mauritius.

TWG, which stands for The Wellbeing Group, was founded by Taha Bouqdib, Maranda Barnes and Rith Aum-Stievenard in Singapore. TWG Tea is internationally recognised and sold in departmental stores and restaurants in London, the US, Munich and more.
