House Tour: 1,938 sq ft Singapore home with a modern eclectic style

This spacious home design by WY-TO Group features plenty of colours cleverly worked into its modern eclectic mix.

by Young Lim  /   April 22, 2022

Sometimes it can be challenging for a homeowner to decide on a specific style or colour scheme for the home, there is just too much potential to be derived from a new home with plenty of rooms in need of a complete transformation. But having too many options doesn’t have to be a bad thing, as seen in this beautiful home designed by WY-TO Group.

The homeowner, a young creative lady, had sought the help of the design studio to revamp a 180 sqm terraced home they bought from the resale market. The design team sought to combine all the preferences of the homeowner into a chic modern style enhanced with an eclectic look.

In a bid to merge the in- and outdoor areas together, the design team suggested large folding glass doors that can slide away to bring the living room and terrace together. This also allows plenty of natural light to fill the space during the day.

The living and dining areas are located next to each other, but they are cleverly delineated by the use of different designs for the ceiling. The living area’s ceiling is finished in plaster while the dining area features a cement screed design with cove lighting.

The contrasting look of the teal cabinetry and the yellow kitchen island is an immediate eye-catcher. Notice how the design team also sought to balance out the bright colours with plenty of white walls.

The design team custom-created the kitchen island, which features a concrete screed texture to complete the ceiling above the dining table. However, the island was finished in a pop of yellow and enhanced with LED light strip to accentuate the unique texture of the island.

Behind the island, we see an angled wall that ends in an elegant curve leading to the powder room and storage room.

image

For the powder room, or common bathroom on the first floor, the homeowners opted for a radically different colour palette with varying shades of burgundy tiles. This surprising twist to the home decor is not just refreshing but becomes part of the home’s charm as well.

image

Along the kitchen counter, we see the use of the teal cabinetry creating an interesting juxtaposition against the white countertop and stainless steel backsplash.

image

The interesting mix of ceiling designs help to break up the straightforward layout across the living, dining and kitchen areas harmoniously. It also helps to create an effortless flow of space leading from one zone to another. The bold lines used in the design language are also applied for the stairs leading up to the second floor.

image

The homeowners complemented the eclectic look of their home with equally colourful accessories.

image

In the bedroom, we see the transition from the teal cabinetry downstairs to a rich jade colour for the walls and shelving.

image

The rounded edges of the walls add a modern vibe to the space.

image

For this bathroom on the second floor, the design team suggested a more soothing colour theme that would complement the colour of the walls outside. However, attention was paid to the detail in the ceiling and wall treatments. Curved walls help to direct the eye to the counter while also creating a sense of symmetry to the space. What’s really outstanding in this space is the raw concrete ceiling, which has been left exposed to provide a hint of industrial chic.

image

On the other side of the bedroom is an open work area.

image

This area also extends to the foyer, which has been jazzed up with a collection of contemporary artworks.

image

One of the secrets hidden behind the coloured panels is a fold-down bed that can be used when guests stay over.

image

Folding panels can be rolled out to segment off the work area to turn it into a guest bedroom.

image

Thanks to the unique design touches and clever lighting, this home has been turned from an old abode with a plain layout into a contemporary work of living art for this happy homeowner.
