House Tour: A contemporary luxe three-storey terrace home built for family time

Now that their children are fully grown, the homeowners of this terrace house asked to tear down the original two-storey build and redesign it as a three-storey home with plenty of communal spaces to accommodate family time.

by Melody Bay  /   August 23, 2021

As the family grows and changes, so does a home. This was the case for this terrace home in the Southwest, as their three daughters are now fully-grown adults. To accommodate their family’s changing needs, the homeowners appointed Mark Chen of Artistroom to fully redesign the home.

One of the most important considerations was to have large enough communal spaces to facilitate precious family time, while retaining enough bedrooms for each family member to retreat to when they want privacy. To do this, Mark started from scratch, tearing down the original two-storey build and reconstructing it as a three-storey house, with plenty of large and seamlessly-connected communal areas. This gives the family enough room to host social gatherings as well, which they love to do.

It helped that the homeowners have a professional background in fabricating and supplying concrete slabs for construction projects. Their expertise allowed them to explore different techniques for integrating large-format stone and tiles into the living, kitchen and bathroom areas together with Mark, resulting in a visually seamless space that showcases the natural beauty of the grain.

The home was rebuilt as a three-storey house, with a light facade and plenty of greenery. If you look closely at the lattice on the second floor, their house number shows up – a clever visual enhancement.

Mark created a rectilinear layout for the communal spaces, seamlessly connecting the living room all the way through the kitchen and to the outdoor space at the rear of the house. This enables the family members to see each other and feel connected even if they are in different rooms.

Here, the large-format marble tiles (1.5m by 3m) create a sense of expansiveness. To balance out the look and add warmth, Mark incorporated wood veneer finishes.

The long wooden dining table offers ample room for large social gatherings. For easier access to the different levels, Mark also installed a lift.

The kitchen had to be large enough so that the family could cook together. Here, the island counter is a precast slab with the top made from ultrathin Silestone. This is complemented by wood beams on the ceiling and dark grey large-format tiles, resulting in a relaxed modern villa look.

Creating large and comfortable bedrooms, with sufficient storage in each, was another priority. In the master bedroom, Mark divided the space up into smaller functional zones. A wardrobe section is off to the side, while the vanity area is separate from the sleeping area by means of a full-height cabinet.
