Material choice was key for the design and renovation of this 142sqm HDB maisonette flat in Tampines. As the homeowners wanted a monochrome palette and a luxe hotel feel, designer Swift Interior had to ensure all materials used were of premium quality for that luxurious touch.
To address the brief, Swift Interior also reconfigured parts of the home, such as combining the living room and kitchen into a spacious open-concept area separated by a black-framed glass divider. Upstairs, room was made for a walk-in wardrobe for the couple.
AT A GLANCE
Home: HDB maisonette flat in Tampines
Size: 143 sqm
Who lives here: A family of two

The kitchen space was dramatically enlarged by removing the walls, creating an open-concept area separated from the living room by means of a sliding door. A kitchen island takes centre stage, providing an area for grabbing a quick meal or drink.
Sleek black lines lend a graphic element to the kitchen.
In the living room, things are kept simple with an all-white palette punctuated by black accents like the TV feature wall. Even the ceiling fan is in deep black, creating a cohesive palette.
To make the most of the high ceiling and natural light in the balcony, the dining area was relocated here.
Adding mood lighting to the stairs serves to emphasise the height of the space and adds a luxurious touch.
Upstairs, the bedroom has a distinct contemporary hotel vibe with a dark-tinted mirror as a feature wall, which visually doubles the size of the room and reflects the soft lighting.
The door to the bathroom is in fluted glass, allowing light to pass through while still retaining privacy.
The couple wanted a hotel-like feel for the bathroom as well, which was achieved with marble tiles, minimalist lines and sleek black accents.
