House Tour: Peaceful simplicity and earthy hues in this 5-room Ang Mo Kio HDB flat

Clean lines and muted, earthy neutrals form the design backbone of this flat, designed for a couple’s quality time together.

by Melody Bay  /   August 27, 2021

The simple pleasures in life are the focus of the design in this five-room flat in Ang Mo Kio: reading good books, cooking delicious meals, spending quality time together.

As such, when the homeowner couple approached Arche Interior for the design and renovation, they decided to have a classic understated look typified by clean lines and earthy neutrals. The uncluttered space would also help to highlight some of the statement furniture pieces the couple owns, such as a HAKAMA table in the dining room.

The home was split into two distinct but unified zones: an active zone in the living hall, study, dining room and kitchen, with the resting zone comprising the master suite and walk-in wardrobe.

As the couple are book lovers, they needed a sizeable display space for their book collection. Arche Interior incorporated a floor-to-ceiling bookcase with a classic rolling library ladder.

Parts of the bookshelf double up as display niches for mementos and knick-knacks.

Also on the couple’s wishlist was a bay window settee for reading.

To keep the space visually interesting without adding unnecessary clutter, Arche Interior used pale grey to create a half-wall in the living room. The rest of the palette was kept in woody, earthy tones. Pops of colour were added in the form of accessories like cushions, which can be easily swapped out.

Creating a minimalist space ensures that statement pieces like the HAKAMA dining table stand out.

As the couple also enjoys cooking, a fully-functional kitchen was a must. It includes a domino stove, automated kitchen faucet, dishwasher, oven and wine-chiller – all well-concealed so as to maintain the minimalist interior. To add character, Arche Interior put in details like these Italian patterned tiles from Rice and Fields as a backsplash.

The walk-in wardrobe features classic wainscoting, paired with brass door knobs from Lava Vella that stand out against the grey. Above, a family of Bola Disc pendant lights makes a stylish statement.

To open up the space, Arche Interior combined the master bedroom and common bedroom to create a palatial master suite. Here, a feature wall with a pronounced wood grain doubles up as a headboard.

In the bathrooms, the same two-tone palette that appears in the living room is echoed in the form of a white mosaic wall paired with grey tiles.
