“Supper House is created to bridge all the different industries and environments, breaking the traditional industry silos. This will create the kind of inclusive and collaborative platform for our partners and friends to have a healthy conversation leading to meaningful changes in Singapore’s design industry, interior design industry would be part of this vision I have,” says Supper House founder Ashley Chiam.
Having been a visual merchandiser, retail store designer, interior designer and project manager prior to establishing the cool art space, Ashley found a unique space located in an industrial estate to create his personal world of design and art.
Below, he takes us on a look of The Supper House and explains why it is the perfect place for the hip and trendy to head to on the weekends.
“Supper House was founded in Dec 2020 and we are located at 222 Tagore Lane, Unit 04-03 (787603). At the moment, we are operating on appointment only, looking at the Covid restrictions. For exhibits and shows, we normally open every weekend, Saturday and Sunday, 1-6pm.”
“The long term vision is to give the platform for healthy conversation and cross-industry pollination. With this in mind, creative collaboration is key to the survival of the design market.
As an example, could we have home upholstery created with the principles of fashion drapery? Or furniture design from a graphic designer’s approach?
In the long run, Supper House has this in mind, created to give a different perspective to prospective home owners, collaborators and partners.”
“In this space, every conversation starts with a good cup of coffee! We hope this will lead to healthy and meaningful conversation between stakeholders, like-minded home owners and designers will be encouraged.”
“With this as a start, a common understanding could be reached, leading to a pragmatic yet, design-centric outcome for the user. Even if no viable outcome can be reached, we could leave as friends. Keeping the conversation open.”
“The entire design of Supper House is centered around conversation and social engagement. As a result, the studio is designed like a black box with endless potential for wild ideation.”
“So far, in its various mutations, Supper House has been engaged as a ID studio, Gallery Space, Photography Studio, Performance Stage.
And we are looking at other uses, from fashion shows, to rooftop soirees, to product showcases.”
“For Supper House, we aim to showcase art in a home environment, vis-a-vis the usual perception that art only belongs in a sterile gallery surrounding with gallery lighting.
I have had queries from home owners saying that art is only for galleries, they can’t vision it at home! Therefore, what better way than to create my own gallery with art integrated into the interior styling.”
“We are working with various partners and potential collaborators. This includes Samuel Xun, a young artist who uses fashion techniques as a work medium, FloralKokoro and SoulArtistry, both avant garde florists using advanced techniques in their works.”
True to Ashley’s word, a visit to The Supper House feels pretty much like visiting the home of a dear friend.
It feels cosy and inviting, with interesting nooks such as the rooftop bar, where drink sessions are often held among Supper House’s associates and friends. It doesn’t take much to get an invite to the gatherings, simply visit and try to catch Ashley in action.
In a country where most art-related spaces are highly moderated, The Supper House stands out as a casual, and dare we say funky, spot where one is free to let loose and explore the wide grey border that stands between art and creativity.
As an added bonus, the rooftop verandah also provides a breathtaking view of the green vista nearby. If you are bored of the usual haunts in town, consider raising your Instagram game by paying a visit to The Supper House.
