3 Small changes that will make a huge difference to your quality of rest

Having sleep issues? The sleep experts from bedding specialist Tempur offer three tips to help you get into a blissful state of rest.

1. Cover it
Allowing your mattress to get wet from sweat can cause stains and promote mould and mildew growth – an especially gross thought, given that the average person spends one-third of his or her day in bed.

Invest in a mattress pad, cover or protector (they go by different names) that’s machine washable to make it easier to clean regularly.

If allergies are a problem for you or your family, go with an encasing designed to eliminate pesky dust mites.

2. Rotate it
Rotate your mattress every few months so that it wears evenly and lasts longer.

It's especially important for a brand new bed. To prevent it from developing lumps and bumps, rotate the mattress end-to-end every two weeks for the first four months. After that, check your warranty or ask the consultants at the store of purchase.

Hint: Use the straps along the sides of most mattresses to help you position it.

3. Check the frame
In the same way that a house is only as strong as its foundation, your mattress – and, more importantly, your sleep – can be affected by the frame underneath.

To start, purchase a quality bed frame. And with any frame, check the legs, frame joints and castors every six months to see if anything needs tightening.
