Make sure to take note of these points before growing an indoor garden!
1. Climate conditions:
- Even though Singapore is a small country, climatic conditions - humidity, temperature, amount of rainfall and sunlight - still differ from place to place. Make sure that the plants you wish to grow can adapt to the environment in your area.
2. Usage/Choice:
- Ask yourself why are you growing a garden? Don't grow a garden without a purpose, as you must be willing to take care of them.
- There are many ways you can use
- the plants such as herbs in your garden: for food, medicine etc.
- Examples of herbs for culinary purposes: basil, rosemary, thyme etc.
- Examples of herbs for medical purposes: oregano, lemon balm, lavender
3. Space:
- Is your space suitable for growing plants?
- Can they get enough sunlight of 4-6 hours?
- Will the space protect them from threats such as strong winds and heavy rain?
4. Pots:
- The choice of pots definitely matters. Best if the pots are self-watering and have good drainage to avoid drowning your plants.
- Avoid yellow pots because aphids (a garden pest) are attracted to yellow.
- Ikea's Avandbar self-watering pots which are available in different shapes and sizes.
5. Soil:
- The soil is probably the most important factor as when growing plants. Since you would be eating the herbs, you would want soil of good quality.
- Good soil for herbs must have these characteristics: loose and aerated, full of micro-organisms, presence of organic matter, water-retaining ability.
