Home tips: Substituting fresh herbs with dried herbs

If you do not have fresh herbs on hand for some recipes, you can use these equivalent substitutes of dried herbs.

 

IN GENERAL

3 portions of fresh herb = 1 portion of dried herb

BASIL

5 leaves or 2 tsps finely chopped fresh basil = 1 tsp dried basil

CHIVES

1 tbsp finely chopped chives = 1 tsp freeze dryer chives

DILL

3 tsps fresh dill = 1 tsp dried dill

OREGANO

1 tbsp fresh oregano = 1 tsp dried oregano

PARSLEY

3 sprigs or 2 tsps finely chopped fresh parsley = 1 tsp dried parsley

ROSEMARY

1 medium sprig or 1 tbsp fresh rosemary = 1 tsp dried rosemary

SAGE

7 leaves or 2 tsps minced fresh sage = 1 tsp dried sage

THYME

6 sprigs or 1 tbsp fresh thyme = 3/4 tsp ground thyme
