There are different types of cockroaches, and each feeds on something different. Perhaps this is why you've spotted them at different places of your home!

On the left is the American cockroach; it is shiny red or chocolate brown and eats anything that is organic matter (but also sweets, bread, and fruit). Next to it is a common cockroach, which is dark brown with light lateral edges. It eats starchy food as well as things like glue on books and wallpaper. On the right is the German cockroach; it is brownish yellow with two parallel black bands running down its back, and eats starchy food.

While the presence of one or two stray cockroaches is common, a bad infestation should be stopped right away. Here's how to spot an infestation:

  • cockroaches are nocturnal, so if you see cockroaches even during the day, you might have an infestation
  • you will spot a bunch of cockroach droppings throughout your home. They are black or brown cylindrical pellets less than 0.2cm long, and usually found on horizontal surfaces such as floor or shelves
  • there is a distinct, unpleasant smell where the cockroaches have come into contact with
  • you will spot many egg cases, which are found in hiding places such as cupboards, drawers and other fittings

Signs of cockroach infestation

Cockroaches are detrimental to humans because they tend to pick up diseases by lying around in filthy places. They also transmit diseases such as salmonella enteritis, dysentery and gastroenteritis that may cause food poisoning symptoms should they come into contact with food and utensils.

Contacting pest control services, such as Rentokil, is important to prevent an infestation from getting out of hand - especially since cockroaches reproduce fast! Some of the methods used by pest control services include gel baiting and residual spraying which are targeted at the cracks and crevices where cockroaches hide.
