Sound bounces around and is amplified in a room with hard surfaces. You need to cover up or soften the hard surfaces in your apartment by dressing or layering them with soft furnishings. Put thick carpets over the tiled floors, install heavy curtains and invest in upholstered sofas and chairs.
However, the most effective way to deaden noise from the apartment above would be to trap the sound in a vacuum – much like a double-glazed window stops sound from entering. Consider installing a false ceiling a few centimetres below the concrete slab. Ask your contractor to add a thick layer of soundproofing waffle panelling ( the kind used in high-end media rooms) behind the false ceiling to further dampen noise. You can cut down costs by concentrating the waffle panels only in the nosiest rooms.
