First time buyers may find that purchasing -- or even trying out -- mattresses is a daunting task. So, we spoke to Simon Dyer, the managing director of Sealy Asia Pacific (he was recently in Singapore for the re-opening of the Sealy Flagship Store called Sealy Sleep Palace) about what homeowners should do when they are out shopping in stores.

TIP #1: Try the best bed first –- it's the best for a reason, and experiencing an excellent level of comfort and support will help you understand the type of satisfaction possible. The best bed would be from a brand that has been in the market for a long time, and have a reputation for quality as well as a steady evolution of technology.

#TIP 2: When testing out mattresses, lie in the position that you know you like to sleep in. Doesn't matter if you look silly! You need to stay on the bed long enough to truly appreciate how it supports your body.
#TIP 3: Understand your perfect bed. According to Simon, the trick is to stand with your feet apart, close your eyes and breathe slowly. The perfect bed should be able to give you the same feel of relaxation and balance you feel standing up.
#TIP 4: When you do lie down, notice whether the bed is supporting you well in a relaxed natural posture. The bed should be comfortably firm, but not so firm you can feel excessive pressure on the skin's surface.
TIP #5: After you have a clear idea about the sort of sleep comfort and support you need, pay attention to the sides of the bed. "Does it have a quality edge support? This is important because it increases the useful area of your mattress and stops that "rolling out" feeling," says Simon.
