For an uncluttered appearance -- an important factor in minimalist homes -- the designer built large cabinets in the kitchen, but allowed them to recede into the background.
"The living room is large enough, or we can also have our gatherings on the third floor, either in the family area, or on the open terrace," says homeowner Maria Chiu, who tasked architect Kelvin Lim of Materium to redesign her house.

To maximise the room's limited footprint, the designers build storage into the floors with the help of a platform bed, which also works as a decorative element in itself. Having a white built-in cupboard against a white wall also allows this chunky feature recede into the background, making it easier on the eyes.
As the homeowners had wanted their home to be located somewhere quiet and green, the interiors had to match that description, too. Despite being fans of minimalism, the homeowners are not fans of white walls, so they cladded their home surfaces in calming green hues and wood- and concrete-look finishes.

By encasing all the "unsightly" features within a home such as storage, cupboards, and an entrance to a washroom within a glossy black "box", Spacedge Designs created a minimalist appearance. The "wonder box" opens up to reveal many surprises, including its colourful interiors.
