3 stylish lofts in Singapore we'd like to live in

There's something luxurious about living in a loft in Singapore. The high ceiling, the unique layout within an apartment and  the lifestyle associated with loft-living captivates us. Here are three loft apartments that we wish were ours to retreat to:

HOME: A SOHO apartment in Kallang

SIZE: 807sqf

Homeowner Calvin Lim specifically requested a loft-like design, and for the office space to be segregated from the living area. In this way, the living area can also function as a meeting room.

The new space added above deliberately does not span the width of the apartment; it ends 1.7m from the solid wall, retaining the lofty ceiling height for the space on the lower level.

The interior designer Rebecca designed the stairs with layers of transparency. The main structure is black mild steel with floating timber treads, while the balustrade is an unconventional choice: wire mesh.

The open bedroom can be closed off with sliding panels. The existing curtains were literally cut into half: one for the office below, and the other for the bedroom.

As the apartment features full-height windows, there is an abundance of light to balance the dark interior.

SIZE: 507sqf

INTERIOR DESIGNER: Prozfile

Done up in line with the loft’s modern-industrial theme, the bold architectural and decor elements of the living area are tempered by a neutral  palette and whitewashed walls. Instead of an ordinary, bare brick wall, the designers had the bricks in the living room arranged in horizontal, vertical and herringbone patterns for greater visual interest.

The designers utilised the high ceiling by crafting a hanging library.

The full-height laminate wood panelling is not just decorative, it also draws the eye up to show off the soaring ceiling height.

HOME: Private apartment in Balestier

SIZE: 400sqf

INTERIOR DESIGNER: The Interarch Design

This area was formerly the bedroom and enjoyed a 4.8m-high ceiling which is now taken over by a loft bedroom.

The ceiling of the spilt-level isn’t that high, so the designer opted to keep the space largely white to make it look more spacious.

Keeping things simple here makes the bedroom appear much more spacious, especially with the abundant daylight streaming in through the windows.

The couple's study area, where the desk doubles as a dressing table. Also, to save space, the designer hung the computer monitor from the ceiling!

The dining area is housed within the kitchenette, where the seating is maximised thanks to the customised cushioned bench at the bay window.
