There're a lot more ways to create storage space aside from store-bought shelves. Optimise the available wall space you have at home by custom-designing your own wall-to-wall shelves instead. Here are some nifty ideas.

1) Accent shelves

Instead of trying to conceal your storage space, play up the unique colour on the walls by turning it into a focal point for your wall-to-wall shelving concept. In this instance, the lovely teal tone provides an ideal backdrop for the thick timber slabs. The downlights above this area add a dramatic atmosphere, making the ornaments, books and trinkets that you display look even more spectacular.

2) Where form meets function

When it comes to shelving for a functional workspace, the key is always to keep it simple. Practicality is essential, so draw up a list of the things you need to put away before setting the dimensions you need. After that, it's just a game of fitting them all together so they fit on the wall.

3) Swivel doors

This one's a bit trickier. Imagine converting a wall that separates two areas into a large swivel door to hide the wall-to-wall shelf behind it. It's a great idea for an open-concept home design and works well when you want to separate a sleeping space from the work space for example.

4) Box It Up!

Wall-to-wall shelving can extend beyond one wall and even across the doorway too. While the example here might seem slightly farfetched for an apartment space, it serves as an inspiration to show that when it comes to custom-shelving, there are no hard and fast rules at all.

5) Classic Chic

Conventional shelves can be made to look dandy and suave with the use of rich colours and the right panelling. Here, the shelves have been converted into a bar counter and storage area.

6) You can create a cosy corner by using different coloured panels to mark out your storage space. Here, the dominant storage areas are marked out with black panels, which surround the feature lighting on the wall.
