Steering clear of the mainstream wood-and-white Scandinavian design, the homeowners of this 1,800sqf condominium apartment in Joo Chiat went for a rustic, oriental style that reflected their personalities instead.

With help from Alicia Koh, the interior director of design firm I.Poise, they managed to achieve a cosy, resort-like atmosphere that’s perfect for unwinding and entertaining during

the weekends.

The parquet flooring was stained black, while the walls were painted a creamy shade of white – a combination that was easy to match with the array of eclectic furniture the family bought from Thailand.

The lady of the house, who is Thai, prefers to shop from antique shops there; her purchases include a marble dining set, as well as a decorative vanity mirror, and sink cabinet in the bathroom. The family also shopped from local stores with similar styles, such as Taylor B and Woody Antique House.

“This antique look was balanced out with a modern and minimalist kitchen, where we used an oak-finished laminate from EDL and an Alaska marble countertop,” says Alicia, who added that the $80,000 renovation cost includes the replacing of walls and doors, and carpentry work.

The white spray-painted louvre doors throughout the home also add texture and dimension to the stylish living space.
