For real healthy food — and we mean proper balanced meals designed by a nutritionist — check out YOLO, located in a quieter area of the CBD.
But "healthy" doesn't mean bland here. You can expect delicious, hearty dishes like meatballs whole meal pasta and lamb shoulder with braised lentils, and also low-calorie (under 300 calories) ones like salmon quinoa burger and trio salad of chicken zataar, cauliflower and tabbouleh, as well as cauliflower "fried rice". The menu is divided into different categories, 'Shape Up', 'Energise', 'Build' and 'Glow', for different health needs and goals!
The casual outlet is founded by Alexis Bauduin, a health and fitness buff who came in top three of the 2013 edition of reality game show The Apprentice Asia! It was designed by Ong&Ong, to have an industrial-chic look with a funky Pop Art twist, as a grab-and-go bar — you get your order within six minutes — but you can also eat on-site at the banquette seats or communal high tables.
Music lovers might also appreciate YOLO's lifestyle concept. Jazzy hip hop plays from the morning to 3pm, followed by deep house till the place closes for the night. You can even download the music sets being played from the website!
Everything is cooked from scratch in the kitchen, says Alexis. The dishes, priced from $9.90 to $15.90, have fusion flavours and are served in handy paper "trays" or boxes. (Pictured is the beef steak with fragrant nam jim sauce.) A suggestion: For a healthier spin of local favourite dish chicken rice, try the coconut chicken on brown rice, a Thai-style curry version with less than 600 calories!
Since YOLO is open Monday to Saturday, from 8am to 9:30pm, it also has a breakfast menu (that includes high-protein banana pancakes and salmon scrambled eggs), a light bites menu (that includes avocado spread on crackers and Mexican tomato soup) and a sweet treats menu!
YOLO is at #01-01 Icon Village, 12 Gopeng Street, tel: 6221-3029, www.yolofood.com.sg
