Can you have a stylish Christmas without a Christmas tree? After 20 years as an Art Director, my answer is a definitive yes.

This week, our house is filled with the chaos of suitcases and excitement. We’re getting ready to fly back to Taiwan to ring in the New Year with family.

With a flight on the horizon and a full-time job keeping me busy, the idea of wrestling a Christmas tree into the living room—only to take it down immediately—felt impossible. But with two sons at home, skipping Christmas decor entirely wasn’t an option. I wanted them to feel the magic of the season, even if we are living out of suitcases.

This constraint actually sparked my creativity. I leaned into my 20 years of experience as an Art Director to find a middle ground: styling that is impactful, beautiful, and incredibly easy to manage.

I’ve traded the tree for paper textures, multi-seasonal pieces (hello, Chinese New Year!), and bold color choices. It turns out, a “tree-free” Christmas isn’t just convenient—it’s incredibly chic. Here is how I’m balancing the holiday rush with a home that feels warm, inviting, and ready for celebration.

  1. 1. Build Vertical Interest with Big Plants & Paper Trees on Tables
  2. 2. Style with a Multi-Seasonal Rattan Ring
  3. 3. Create a Warm, Inviting Entrance
  4. 4. Break the Rules: Style Beyond Red & Green

1. Build Vertical Interest with Big Plants & Paper Trees on Tables

If you prefer something natural yet simple, start with big vase placed on your dining or console table. Their height immediately anchors the space and brings in the lush greenery associated with Christmas. Pair them with folding paper Christmas trees to layer different heights and textures. The contrast between plants and crisp paper décor adds depth, while the greenery subtly enhances the festive mood.

2. Style with a Multi-Seasonal Rattan Ring

A rattan ring décor piece is incredibly versatile and works beautifully for both Christmas and Chinese New Year. This styling is especially great for those who love a vertical focal point. For Christmas, decorate the ring with artificial foliage in greens.

When CNY arrives, simply refresh it with reds, yellows, or artificial blossoms. This reusable approach not only saves storage space but also blends two festive celebrations seamlessly.

3. Create a Warm, Inviting Entrance

Your entrance sets the tone for the entire festive gathering. Dress it up with oversized paper stars, vintage ornaments, and natural materials like wood and rattan baskets.

These elements give a cosy, nostalgic charm. Add a playful touch with a festive flag garland on the wall—it brings movement and a fun dynamic that instantly greets guests with warmth.

4. Break the Rules: Style Beyond Red & Green

Christmas doesn’t always have to be green and red. For a modern, bold look, choose a clear colour theme—black, white, neutrals, or even monotone.

Then decorate the wall with paper balls and folding fans in various sizes. The layered shapes and minimal palette create a chic, contemporary holiday vibe perfect for anyone looking to refresh the traditional Christmas aesthetic.
