It is not an uncommon practice for families to weave Feng Shui into their homes in Singapore. Some believe doing so can help foster prosperity, while others seek to cultivate balance and peace through the ancient practice. One Singaporean homeowner in her mid-50s is embracing these principles in her condominium, Water Place at Tanjong Rhu.
Ms Kim, a recruitment professional, sought the help of local interior design agency DISTINCTidENTITY to refurbish her home with a modern contemporary aesthetic and also resolve the Feng Shui issues pointed out by her Feng Shui Master. Having previously collaborated with the agency twice, this wasn’t her first rodeo with them.

In Feng Shui, a clutter-free space allows qi, or energy, to flow smoothly and thus bring forth a sense of balance into the home. Ms Kim’s condo is a perfect example of this principle in action. Through the interior design firm, Ms Kim opted for custom built-in carpentry around the home to store and hide unnecessary knick-knacks. With everything neatly tucked away and out of sight, the home feels open and uncluttered.

For the homeowner, the living room is where the “heart of the home” resides. Living alone also means that this space is hers to shape, enjoy, and retreat to. The room embraces a modern contemporary aesthetic, with sleek, low-profile furniture in neutral tones that accentuate the open layout. A white streamlined sofa anchors the space, paired with a minimalist coffee table and subtle, textured accents that add depth without being overwhelming. The room’s clean lines and airy feel create a calm, refined environment, blending elegance with functionality.
For those who are unfamiliar with Feng Shui, the ancient practice revolves around balancing the elements—wood, water, earth, fire, and metal—and ensuring the energy, or qi, flows freely throughout a space.

Interestingly, Ms Kim’s gripe about this living room was the sharp corner by the TV wall and beside the windows, a feature her Feng Shui master warned could disrupt the energy flow. To address this, the interior design team installed a cabinet that not only softened the angle but also added useful storage.
Copper-esque accents, suggested to bring warmth and balance, were subtly integrated through metal inlays on the TV wall and cabinetry. Furthermore, the interior design team was intentional in the use of earthy tones to foster a sense of connectivity in the living room.
Feng Shui Poison Arrow
In Feng Shui, elements like wood and water are often used strategically to enhance the energy of a room—wood is thought to promote growth, while water helps to counteract negative energy. Sharp corners, also known as “poison arrows,” are believed to create tension and agitation, which is why furniture, plants, or curved structures are commonly used to cushion or disguise harsh lines. By incorporating these principles into her living room, the team helped create a space that is not only visually appealing but also energetically harmonious.

On the other hand, the master bedroom boasts soft, cool tones that exude a sense of calmness, ideal for winding down after a long day. The headboard behind the bed boasts subtle wood paneling that brings warmth to the room without drawing too much attention.
Most of the furniture here, from the curved twin lamps to the rounded ottoman, were chosen with a focus on simplicity and features rounded edges to soften the look and avoid any harsh lines—a nod to Feng Shui principles.

Modern Contemporary Bathroom
The bathroom continues the home’s modern contemporary theme. A black-framed sliding glass door separates the shower area, adding a semblance of contrast to the lighter tiles. Stone-textured tiles on the floor and walls also keep the bathroom feeling grounded and contemporary. For the homeowner, this is where she gets ready to seize the day and it makes sense to wake up every day to a design that feels refreshing but peaceful.

Throughout the condo, Feng Shui seems to be at the heart of every design decision. Rounded furniture edges, harmonious color schemes, and copper accents ensured that the home remained balanced, with positive energy flowing freely. If anything, the homeowner and DISTINCTidENTITY have refurbished the space to feel both lived-in and intentional.
And this is perhaps what we all want after a long day.
