Datai Langkawi Resort: Modern meets traditional Malaysian architecture in a 10 million year-old rainforest

Tucked away on the northwestern tip of Langkawi Island, The Datai Langkawi stands as one of the world’s most revered masterclasses in tropical architecture and eco-luxury design.

Set against a 10-million-year-old virgin rainforest overlooking Datai Bay - consistently celebrated as one of the world’s finest beaches - the property seamlessly bridges raw nature with sophisticated, understated luxury.

When Australian architect Kerry Hill and French interior designer Didier Lefort were commissioned to design the resort in the early 1990s, they made a radical decision.

Rather than flattening the beachfront to clear space for hotel blocks, Hill set the main building 40 metres above sea level on a natural forest ridge, 300 metres back from the shore.

This preserved the fragile coastal ecosystem and created an immersive jungle experience. Heavy machinery was strictly limited during construction; trained elephants were used instead to fell trees sparingly, and the timber was immediately reclaimed for building structures.

Opened in 1993

The resort’s design was recognised with the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 2001. Decades later, when the property underwent a major renovation, Didier Lefort returned to meticulously refresh the interiors, ensuring that the iconic “Datai DNA” remained intact while modernising guest technology and sustainability infrastructure.

Traditional Malaysian architecture

The design aesthetic fuses traditional vernacular Malay architecture with sleek, mid-century modernist minimalism.

Low-slung silhouettes, soaring open-timber roof trusses, and expansive open-air timber walkways echo the spatial layout of traditional Malay villages (kampongs).

Materials used

The visual palette relies on dark local hardwoods such as Balau timber, weather-resistant Belian wood shingles, rustic basalt stone foundations, and polished Langkawi marble.

Resort rooms’ interior design

Interior spaces utilise warm, indirect warm-tone lighting and soft neutrals - sand, sage, terracotta, and deep forest green - drawing the eye outward through floor-to-ceiling glass doors directly into the surrounding canopy

Inside each guestroom, the design philosophy emphasises spaciousness and tactile luxury rather than superficial ornamentation.

Soft Egyptian cotton linens adorn custom platform king beds, framed by warm timber panelling and built-in slatted louvres. Integrated daybeds sit adjacent to expansive private balconies or verandas, creating natural transition zones between indoor living quarters and the tropical exterior.

Bathrooms across all room types are palatial and spa-like. They showcase freestanding, deep-soaking bathtubs, twin slate vanities, glass-enclosed rainfall showers, and walk-in dressing areas that feel seamlessly continuous with the main bed chamber.

The resort features 121 rooms, suites, and private villas distributed across three distinct zones - Canopy for central main building, Rainforest for stilted villas along a stream in forest, and Beach for villas by the beach of Datai Bay.

Nightly rates at The Datai Langkawi vary significantly based on season (peak vs. green season) and local resident promotions. Canopy rooms typically range from S$700 to S$1,100 per night for standard Deluxe rooms, extending up to S$1,600+ per night for Canopy Suites.

Standalone Rainforest Villas generally start between S$1,100 and S$1,600 per night, while Rainforest Pool Villas range from S$1,800 to S$2,500+ per night.
