H&D30: A radiologist’s soothing bungalow home, from the Dec-Jan 1987/88 issue of Home & Decor

Home & Decor Singapore pays tribute to three decades of design with a look back on its most interesting features over the years.
In the second article of our H&D30 series, we revisit a radiologist’s clean-lined, neutral-coloured home we covered in our 1987/88 issue.
Dr Irene Lim is a radiologist by profession, but her passion for the finer things in life is immediately apparent the moment you step inside her airy, spacious bungalow home.
An imposing grand piano sits like a beautiful piece of sculpture in one corner of the living room, while a wall-to-wall music centre dominates the other.
When she began renovating her house, Dr Lim had no particular theme in mind. "Everything sort of evolved," she explains.
But from the first, she knew she wanted an open-plan interior with public spaces - living, dining and music rooms - flowing into each other. "I don't like rigid arrangements. I like to be able to switch furniture, even the functions of different areas aorund, according to my needs." So all the unnecessary walls were knocked down.
A bleached wood dining set provides key setting for formal Christofle silverware. Fresh tiger lilies in a silver bowl complete the simple, no-fuss, yet elegant table.
In her bedroom, toning shades of grey from the bridge between the two “opposites” to create an appealing oasis. The striking black lacquer bed has an adjustable headboard and swivelling side tables.
Cane furniture upholstered in pure white makes a refreshing statement against the abundant greenery of the garden beyond. Natural slate floor tiles reinforce the put-your-feet-up mood of the patio which often doubles as an outdoor living room for informal entertaining.
